Description:

Abstract:

These data are daily summary checklists of all bird species observed at U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Science Center (ASC) field camps. Data include species observation details such as observers, dates, location, and number of individuals seen. Field camps were located in Northern, Western, Interior, Southwest, Southcentral, and Southeast Alaska, Baja California Sur Mexico, and northern Russia.

Purpose:

Scientists from the ASC regularly work in remote field camps around the state of Alaska and elsewhere. Though not the primary research focus of these camps, many researchers maintain daily checklists of all bird species encountered during field work. The ASC has numerous historic checklists in their original paper format. To make these checklists publicly accessible, the analog data from individual camps was transcribed to a digital format for public release.

After conversion to digital format, the data was cross-checked and verified against the original analog data sheets. Uncommon and unexpected species were considered critically for inclusion in the data by observers with knowledge and experience of the local avifauna. However, users should be aware of the possibility of some species misidentification in the data. Further, the absence of a species on a list does not necessarily mean that the species was absent, but potentailly that the tallies of species observed was incomplete.

During field research activities (e.g., travel to and from work areas, observations of seasonal avian arrival, nest searches and monitoring, and bird banding) observers noted birds present on the study area. Observers conferred daily and compiled a single list of bird species encountered at each camp each day. Annually, observations were recorded between snowmelt (April or May) and the completion of research activities (June - August). The exception was in Baja Mexico where lists were compiled in late winter (February or March).

Original paper records were transcribed into digital tables in the eBird Checklist Format specified for ingestion by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology eBird database and then imported to eBird. The checklists were then downloaded from eBird as a CSV file to provide consistency with other data that users can download from eBird. However, for this data release we added an additional "Historical Name" attribute to each eBird table to account for instances where the currently accepted species name (following the eBird/Clements Checklist) differs from the species name in the original records. The originally recorded species name is provided as an "Historical Name".
