Landscape and Population Ecology of Migratory Birds in Alaska and the Pacific Basin

This project addresses the needs of Department of Interior agencies that have a mandate to manage and conserve birds and their habitats in Alaska and the Pacific Basin.

Abstract

This project will yield reliable ecological and demographic information for use by agency and non-government cooperators to manage migratory birds and their habitats. It is expected that project results will be the foundation for adaptive management programs designed to conserve and enhance avifauna on National Wildlife Refuges, National Parks, National Forests, Bureau of Land Management and Department of Defense units, and other federal lands in Alaska. This large scope and geographic area supports a tremendous diversity of endemic bird species that are of interest to management agencies, as well as the general public through consumptive and non-consumptive activities. Overall project objectives are to determine trends and drivers of population dynamics and habitat requirements of birds and the response of migratory birds to environmental change in Alaska and adjacent regions.Additionally, peer-reviewed publications generated from this research project will be of interest to educators, students, and others in the scientific community. Nation-wide, birding and general interest in birds has escalated in recent years. The general public will profit from this research project through access to Center web sites, staff presentations, popular articles, fact sheets, and other outreach endeavors.
