Description:
Abstract:
The USGS mapped geomorphic features in the lower 7.5 kilometers of the Taiya River valley bottom in and near Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park near Skagway, Alaska. This dataset presents delineations of geomorphic surfaces. Geomorphic surface boundaries were prepared from 2003 lidar elevation data and updated using 2017 and 2018 aerial orthophotographs at eroding riverbanks, such that the dataset generally represents 2018 conditions. Interpretations of surface age primarily used 2003 lidar data and aerial imagery from 1948 and 2003. Mapped surfaces consist of the 2003 active main stem (Taiya River and West Creek wetted channel, bars, islands, and major sloughs), additional areas recruited to the main stem by 2018, main stem surfaces abandoned between the 1940s and 2003, main stem surfaces abandoned prior to the 1940s, alluvial fans, and emergent tidal flats.
Purpose:
The Taiya River near Skagway, Alaska, along with much of its river valley, is situated in the Chilkoot Trail Unit of Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, an area rich in history and recreational resources that also forms an important ecological corridor. As part of the Natural Resources Preservation Program, a science partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and National Park Service, the USGS conducted a reconnaissance of hydrologic and geomorphic processes in the lower 7.5 kilometers of the Taiya River valley bottom, which includes the confluence with major tributary West Creek. The project used historical streamflow and sediment data, aerial imagery, and high-resolution topographic data, supplemented with collection of suspended sediment data and ground observations of landforms and processes, to document hydrologic conditions and the geomorphic history, forms, and processes of Taiya River valley bottom surfaces and channels. Information from the study is intended to help land managers conduct planning, management, and resource conservation activities, request additional studies, or develop monitoring plans.
Supplemental_Information:
A companion dataset, Off-Main-Stem Channels in the Lower 7.5 Kilometers of the Taiya River Valley, Alaska, 2018, contains delineations of off-main-stem channels.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Basis for interpretation of geomorphic surfaces is discussed in the cross-referenced USGS report. Data were peer reviewed prior to dissemination.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Snapping and editing procedures were used to ensure polygons were completely enclosed and did not overlap. Only categories within the mapping framework hierarchy were used in attribute assignment.
Completeness_Report:
Data set is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details. This study focused on fluvial surfaces and omitted small features that might be related to other processes. See cross-referenced USGS report for discussion.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
A formal accuracy assessment of the horizontal positional information in the data set has not been conducted. The accuracy of the delineations is closely linked to the accuracy of the underlying datasets, primarily the 2003 Chilkoot Trail unit lidar data, which has a 1.4-1.7 m post spacing and is presented as 1 m pixels, and also the 1:12,000-scale 2017 Digital Globe Orthophoto and 1:12,000 2018 Digital Globe Satellite Orthophoto (for the lower 2 kilometers of the valley) for a few locations.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
A percent slope map was derived from the 2003 Chilkoot Trail lidar and used to generate 15-percent slope contours using ArcGIS tools. In a polyline shapefile, geomorphic surfaces and off-main-stem channels were outlined using the editing Trace tool to trace 15-percent slope contours and digitizing at 1:2,000 as needed to connect contours or draw surface boundaries lacking a distinct break in slope. Locations of active and historically active geomorphic surfaces and off-main-stem channels were mapped for 2003 conditions, except for small areas eroded by the main stem by 2018, for which boundaries were digitized at about 1:2,000 from aerial orthophotographs. Fluvial surfaces were assigned a relative age from interpretation of the 2003 lidar and 1948, 2003, 2017, and 2018 imagery. Lines were converted to polygons using ArcGIS tools and polygons were dissolved by a designated attribute to create a separate surfaces file. Non-off-main-stem polygons in the original polygon file were deleted to produce the off-main-stem channels file.
