Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains selected information about U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages in Alaska that had at least 5 years of daily streamflow record through September 30, 2017. The goals for developing this dataset were to identify USGS streamgages that had at least 5 years of daily streamflow that responded mostly to seasonal meteorological inputs, that had a definable drainage basin above a minimum size from which basin characteristics could be determined, and that provided streamflow data not similar to another streamgage record in the dataset. Streamgages meeting these criteria for at least part of their records constituted the dataset for a study investigating seasonal flow regimes and streamflow drivers for Alaska. For 253 streamgages meeting selection criteria, data include period of record characteristics, basin characteristics, and flow regime cluster analysis results. The basin characteristics are provided in their original U.S. customary units and as values transformed to metric units. For an additional 78 streamgages, data include the special conditions affecting streamflow that disqualified the streamgage from the study, including recurring outburst floods, regulation, urbanization, hydrologic redundancy with another streamgage, drainage basin below minimum size, or an indeterminate drainage basin.
Purpose:
Understanding streamflow response to climate change in Alaska, particularly flooding, is a critical water resources management need. Seasonal streamflow regimes help identify the respective contributions of multiple streamflow drivers. Streamgage record conditions, basin characteristics and seasonal flow regime classification results were compiled or computed to support an investigation of seasonal flow regimes and streamflow drivers for selected U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages in Alaska. These data are intended to be used to support streamflow analyses for individual or multiple streamgages in the dataset.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Basin characteristics were visually checked after computation for consistency with data sources and for values far outside the range of expected values. The basis for determination of seasonal flow regimes is discussed in the cross-referenced publication. The data were peer reviewed prior to dissemination.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data have been examined and processed for the presence of omissions. All values in the data tables have been checked extensively for errors and are considered ready for dissemination. All values are considered within bounds of the study constraints.
Completeness_Report:
USGS streamgages in Alaska not meeting study criteria were omitted. Study criteria required streamgages to (1) have at least 5 years of daily streamflow record through water year 2017 that were unaffected by regulation, urbanization, or outburst floods, (2) have a definable drainage area originating at the streamgage that was equal to or larger than 0.4 square miles (1 square kilometer), and (3) not be hydrologically redundant with another streamgage were selected for analysis. Streamgage pairs having nested basins were considered hydrologically redundant when their drainage area ratio (larger divided by smaller) was less than 5. Redundant pairs were reduced to the longer-record streamgage, except for the very large Yukon River, where the smallest drainage area was selected to be more comparable to other streams. A total of 253 streamgages met the selection criteria for at least part of their records. Omitted parts of records included specific years not meeting the study criteria and are addressed in the attached table, flowRegime_gageAttrib_basinChar_AK_Curran_1914_2017.csv. Omitted streamgages are addressed in the attached table, flowRegime_gageAttrib_basinOmit_AK_Curran_1914_2017.csv.

This data set contains spatially gridded estimates of average monthly and annual precipitation for the climatological period 1971-2000. Distribution of the point measurements to a spatial grid was accomplished using the PRISM model, developed by Christopher Daly of the PRISM Climate Group. Unlike other PRISM datasets, the values used in these PRISM grids for Alaska are (mm * 100) for precipitation and (Celsius * 100) for temperature. Also note that the original grids from Univ. of Oregon were delivered in NAD27 Decimal Degrees and were reprojected by NPS to conform to the standard projection used for Alaska wide datasets; namely, Alaska Albers NAD83. Because the cell size for decimal degree data varies from north to south across an area as large as Alaska when converted to meters (as well as the x/y ratio), a cell size of 771 meters was used (determined at mid point of data extent) for the reprojection. The resampling method used was nearest neighbor for this dataset to attempt to maintain same values for the same location.

Process_Description:
Study basin characteristics consisted of an expansion of Appendix A of Curran et al. (2016), which compiled basin centroid location from the basin boundary; drainage area and mean basin elevation from ASTER GDEM version 2 elevation data (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, 2011); mean annual precipitation and mean minimum January temperature (used here as an indicator of winter temperature) from PRISM temperature and precipitation data for Alaska (Gibson, 2009a, 2009b) and Canada (PRISM Climate Group, 2002); and percent of basin covered by glaciers from Randolph Glacier Inventory version 2.0 glacier coverage data (RGI Consortium, 2012) for most basins. For basins not in Curran et al. (2016), we used ArcGis software (ESRI, 2017) and methods and sources described in that study to compute these basin characteristics. Additionally, we computed mean monthly precipitation and temperature for all study basins using the Curran et al. (2016) methods and PRISM data.

Streamgages that had at least 5 years of daily streamflow record through WY 2017 that were unaffected by regulation, urbanization, or outburst floods, had a definable drainage area originating at the streamgage, and were not hydrologically redundant with another streamgage were selected for analysis. Identification of disqualified records or parts of records relied on USGS annual peak-streamflow file data codes, supplemental streamgage information in annual data reports (accessed in NWIS or via https://wdr.water.usgs.gov/), and discussions with USGS staff and others familiar with the sites. Streamgage basins nested within another basin were considered hydrologically redundant when their drainage area ratio (larger divided by smaller) was less than 5. Redundant streamgage pairs were reduced to the longer-record streamgage, except for the very large Yukon River, where the smallest drainage area determined site selection because no other streams in Alaska are comparable in size to the longest-recording Yukon River streamgage. A total of 253 USGS streamgages met the selection criteria for at least part of their records.

Daily mean streamflow data were edited to omit an entire year if ineligible conditions occurred in any part of the year and were truncated to full water years (missing no more than 1 day) using the standard October-September period, except at 7 sites where data were collected on a water year defined by alternate months. Daily mean streamflow records for February 29 were omitted. Annual peak streamflows, or maximum instantaneous streamflows, were edited to remove annual peaks coded as outburst, regulated, or historic (collected outside the systematic gaging period) in the NWIS peak-flow file. The NWIS Help System page https://help.waterdata.usgs.gov/codes-and-parameters/peak-streamflow-special-conditions-peak.peak_cd defines codes for peak streamflow special defintions. Annual peak streamflows occurring on February 29 were assigned a date of February 28.

Entity_Type_Label: flowRegime_gageAttrib_dendrogram_AK_Curran_1914_2017.pdf
Entity_Type_Definition:
An Adobe Acrobat portable document file (.pdf). This graphic represents a dendrogram of hierarchical cluster analysis of seasonal streamflow patterns (represented as monthly Pardé z-scores for February, May, June, and July) for 253 streamgages in Alaska. Seasonal flow regimes are outlined at the 3-group, or class, level (1 is rain-dominated, 2 is snowmelt-dominated, and 3 is high-elevation-melt-dominated) and the 9-group, or subclass, level, (designated by 3-group identifier number and sequential subclass letter). Dendrogram order (numbered from left to right) and seasonal flow regime identification are provided for each streamgage in the attached table, flowRegime_gageAttrib_basinChar_AK_Curran_1914_2017.csv.

Entity_Type_Label: flowRegime_gageAttrib_scatterplots_AK_Curran_1914_2017.pdf
Entity_Type_Definition:
An Adobe Acrobat portable document file (.pdf). This plot shows a scatterplot and Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r) for variable pairs, where variables are dimensionless monthly Pardé coefficients, or mean monthly streamflow divided by mean annual streamflow. The plots on the diagonal are density curves showing the distribution of the data for each variable. Variables are identified as “mean_va_” followed by a numeral for the month. The statistical significance for the correlation coefficient (Corr) is symbolized as *** if the p-value is < 0.001, ** if the p-value is < 0.01, and * if the p-value is < 0.05.
