Description:
Abstract:
This data release contains the analytical results and evaluated source data files of geospatial analyses for identifying areas in Alaska that may be prospective for different types of lode gold deposits, including orogenic, reduced-intrusion-related, epithermal, and gold-bearing porphyry. The spatial analysis is based on queries of statewide source datasets of aeromagnetic surveys, Alaska Geochemical Database (AGDB3), Alaska Resource Data File (ARDF), and Alaska Geologic Map (SIM3340) within areas defined by 12-digit HUCs (subwatersheds) from the National Watershed Boundary dataset. The packages of files available for download are:
1. LodeGold_Results_gdb.zip - The analytical results in geodatabase polygon feature classes which contain the scores for each source dataset layer query, the accumulative score, and a designation for high, medium, or low potential and high, medium, or low certainty for a deposit type within the HUC. The data is described by FGDC metadata. An mxd file, and cartographic feature classes are provided for display of the results in ArcMap. An included README file describes the complete contents of the zip file.
2. LodeGold_Results_shape.zip - Copies of the results from the geodatabase are also provided in shapefile and CSV formats. The included README file describes the complete contents of the zip file.
3. LodeGold_SourceData_gdb.zip - The source datasets in geodatabase and geotiff format. Data layers include aeromagnetic surveys, AGDB3, ARDF, lithology from SIM3340, and HUC subwatersheds. The data is described by FGDC metadata. An mxd file and cartographic feature classes are provided for display of the source data in ArcMap. Also included are the python scripts used to perform the analyses. Users may modify the scripts to design their own analyses. The included README files describe the complete contents of the zip file and explain the usage of the scripts.
4. LodeGold_SourceData_shape.zip - Copies of the geodatabase source dataset derivatives from ARDF and lithology from SIM3340 created for this analysis are also provided in shapefile and CSV formats. The included README file describes the complete contents of the zip file.
Purpose:
The purpose of this spatial analysis is to examine and understand the distribution of different lode gold deposit types in Alaska. This GIS-based analysis uses published datasets of geochemistry, mineral resource data, aeromagnetic surveys, and geology to identify areas that may be prospective for this type of mineral deposit. The analysis also identifies areas with limited data, and could be used to highlight areas needing additional studies. A full description of the analysis process and results is published in the associated U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2021-1041 https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20211041.

The Alaska Resource Data File, ARDF, is a database containing descriptive information about mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in Alaska. ARDF is one the data layers used to analyze for lode gold resource potential in Alaska. A list of keywords was developed for each deposit model and searched for within each ARDF record. These keyword searches were weighted and scored, and then included in the analysis for lode gold resource potential in Alaska

The 12-digit HUC dataset was downloaded in 2015 and modified to provide a spatial template for analyzing mineral prospectivity in the state of Alaska.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
ARDF records are maintained in a Filemaker Pro database. The records were exported to CSV file format, then converted to an ESRI point feature class. Tables containing keywords with weighting factors was created for the lode gold deposit model. Keywords were produced for the following ARDF fields: Alteration, Commodities_main, Commoditites_other, Deposit_model_number, Deposit_model, Gangue_minerals, Ore_minerals, Reserves, Production_notes, Site_type, Host_rock, Additional_Comments, and Geologic_description. A python script, ARDF_search.py, was created to score each ARDF record based on keywords and a weighting factor. This score was a component used for the prospectivity mapping of lode gold deposits.
Process_Date: 2018
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Polygons were selected from the Alaska state geology database based on the lithology attributes and the relative abundance of the lithology in the geologic unit to create lithology data layers to aid in estimating the potential of various types of lode gold deposit models in Alaska. Once the polygons were selected, they were exported to a new dataset, and then the polygons were dissolved into single part features. All attributes from the original geology dataset were dropped. Each of these lithology layers is used for the prospectivity mapping of lode gold deposits.
Process_Date: 2018
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Criteria for querying each of the different data layers was developed for each lode gold deposit model. These parameters are fully described in OFR2021-1041, and summarized in the included scoring tables. Customized ArcGIS Python scripts were created to evaluate each HUC for the pertinent values in each data layer (aeromagnetic, ARDF, geochemistry, and lithology), and then the different data layer scores were totaled. Based on the range and data distribution of the total HUC scores, a ranking of high, medium, low, or unknown potential was assigned. A certainty ranking was also assigned, based on the HUC's total score and the number of data layers available for scoring the HUC's potential.
