Abstract:
This data release supports the paper titled, "Insights into the metamorphic history and origin of flake graphite mineralization at the Graphite Creek graphite deposit, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, USA", published in the journal Mineralium Deposita. The data release includes zircon and titanite U-Pb-Thisotope and age data, monazite U-Pb-Th isotope, trace element and age data, carbon and sulfur stableisotope data, and graphite Raman spectroscopy data, from samples collected at the Graphite Creek deposit, Alaska. Sample location information and descriptions are in table "sample_descriptions.csv". The raw numerical data are presented in tabular format. Additionally, plots of select zircon data – conventional discordia, U/Th vs age, U (ppm) vs age, and percent discordance vs age – are included in PDF format (zircon_plots.pdf), along with scanning electron microscope cathodoluminescence images of zircon in TIFF format. Folder "zircon_data" contains all zircon numerical data, plots, and images. Table "raman_peak_fits.csv" contains all raw Raman spectra peak fit data. Table "monazite_isotopic_data.csv" contains all monazite data. Table "carbon_sulfur_isotopic_data.csv" contains all carbon and sulfur data. Interpretations of the data are presented in the aforementioned journal paper.
Purpose:
Zircon U-Pb age data from high metamorphic-grade metasedimentary rocks such as those found at Graphite Creek can constrain the depositional and metamorphic history of the metamorphic rock protoliths. The youngest detrital zircon ages in a sample provide information about the maximum depositional age of the precursor sediments, while metamorphic zircons provide information about the timing of metamorphism and possible effects of isotopic disturbance. Monazite and titanite U-Pb age data from metamorphic rocks provide information about the timing of, conditions of, and processes involved in metamorphism. Carbon and sulfur stable isotope data offer constraints on the source(s) of these elements in the rocks and metamorphic environment. Raman spectroscopic data from graphite provide information on the crystallinity and temperature conditions at which the graphite formed. Collectively, these data can be used to interpret the geologic history and processes involved in formation of graphite deposits.

Sample preparation and laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U/Pb analyses on zircons were performed by GeoSep Services (GSS) laboratory between 2019 and 2020. Monazite U/Pb and trace element laser ablation split-stream (LASS) analysis was conducted at Laurentian University in 2019. Titanite U/Pb LA-ICP-MS, graphite Raman spectroscopic, and carbon and sulfur stable isotope mass spectrometric analyses were conducted at the U.S. Geological Survey Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry (G3) Science Center from 2019 to 2020. Sample preparation and analytical procedures for each type of analysis are described in the accompanying document, analytical_methods.pdf.
