Abstract:
This data release contains the elemental concentration data for more than 1700 archived stream-sediment samples collected in Alaska. Samples were retrieved from the USGS Mineral Program's sample archive in Denver, CO, and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys Geologic Materials Center in Anchorage, AK. All samples were analyzed using a multi-element analytical method involving fusion of the sample by sodium peroxide, dissolution of the fusion cake by nitric acid, and elemental analysis by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Additionally, 106 samples from the Nixon Fork area were analyzed by a second multi-element method in which the samples are decomposed by a mixture of hydrochloric, nitric, perchloric, and hydrofluoric acids and the elemental composition is determined by ICP-OES and ICP-MS. New Hg (mercury) concentrations, determined by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry, are reported for 296 samples from southeast Alaska.
Purpose:
Reanalysis of archived samples is a cost effective way to improvethe stream geochemical data for Alaska. Reanalyzing the samplesincreases upon the previous number of elements analyzed, and thenewer analytical methods have improved detection limits. Samples were reselected based on three different spatial criteria; 1) to improve the spatial distribution of stream sediment data for W (tungsten) prospectivity in Alaska; 2) improve data in the area surrounding the Nixon Fork mine area; and 3) improve data in southeast Alaska, specifically to characterize tributaries of the Chilkat, Taku, Stikine, and Unuk rivers.

All sample batches were run with standard reference materials.The analytical results of the quality control (QC) samples are provided in table geology_geochemQC_Alaska_wang_2019.csv. In addition, duplicate analyses were run on six of the Nixon Fork samples. These analyses are provided in the same table. The lower and upper reporting limits for each type of element analysis is provided within OFR2021-1058 and in metadata section Entity and Attribute Information.

Data determined by both the fusion method and the four-acid methodwas considered acceptable if recovery of each element is +/- 15% at five times the Lower Limit of Determination (LOD) and the calculated Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) of duplicate samples is no greater than 15%. Hg data was acceptable if recovery of mercury is +/- 20% at five time the LOD and the calculated RSD of duplicate samples is no greater than 20%. Total sulfur data was acceptable if recover is at 15% at five times the LOD and the calculated RSD of duplicate samples is no greater than 15%.

The latitude and longitude information were obtained from the Alaska Geochemistry Database version 3.0 (AGDB3). The values are presented with 4 decimal places, however this may imply more accuracy than appropriate. The locations in the AGDB3 dataset came from many different sources, including GPS receivers, field notebooks, field maps (varying scales), publications, and sample submittal forms. Latitude and longitude information were mostly provided by the sample submitters and the positional accuracy is unknown due to not knowing the source of the locational information. The locations in AGDB3 are updated when better source data is found.

In this method, a 1 gram sample was mixed with anaccelerator and heated via an induction furnace to oxidize sulfurto sulfur dioxide. For mercury analysis a cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometrymethod was used. A 0.5 gram sample was digested using a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids, and dilute potassium permanganate and potassium persulfate in a water bath. Excess potassium permanganate was reduced by hydroxylamine sulfate solution, the Hg(II) was reduced by a solution of Tin(II) chloride (stannous chloride). Mercury vapor was separated and measured with a FIMS 100 Mercury Analysis System.
