Abstract:
This data release contains two tables with information on seasonal values for temperature, wind, and snow cover collected at the Colville River Delta, Alaska, 2011-2018. Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey used an on-site weather station to automatically record the temperature and speed and direction of the wind across the duration of their field season. Researchers also established permanent plots that they visited to record the percent cover of snow from their arrival at the site each spring until all snow had melted.
Purpose:
These observations were collected to better understand how changing environmental conditions may affect the reproductive output of Arctic-breeding birds.
Supplemental_Information:
This release contains multiple tables that contribute to a more comprehensive collection with information on avian demographics and associated environmental conditions collected at the Colville River Delta, Alaska, 2011-2018. Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey began studying the reproductive ecology of birds at this site near the Beaufort Sea coast in 2011, focusing study efforts on geese and shorebirds. Researchers also collected information on seasonal trends in snow cover, temperature, wind, and the abundance of arthropods (data included in this data package).

In 2011, we established 20 plots for snow-cover monitoring. Plots were distributed across a 2.6 square-km study plot where researchers concurrently studied the breeding ecology of birds. Ten plots were distributed on the north half of the plot, and ten plots were distributed to the south half of the plot. These plots were visited each year at 2-6 day intervals in the course of normal daily activities (typically two days) from the time researchers arrived at camp until all snow had melted from the plots. Observers visually estimated the percent cover (to the nearest 1%) of snow, standing water, and land in a 25-m radius centered on each plot. Plots did not include permanent water bodies, so the standing water estimates indicate standing water resulting from melting snow or ice and/or flooding.

We deployed a solar-powered HOBO U30 (Onset Computers, Inc.) weather station upon arrival at our study site each spring. The location of the station was approximately 70.437 N, 150.675 W, and the unit recorded wind speed and direction, temperature, and relative humidity. Data collection rates varied from 15 minutes (2017 & 2018) to hourly (2011-2016). At the end of each field season, we downloaded the information from the weather station to computer as a csv file.
