Description:
Abstract:
This data release contains information on the seasonal diversity and abundance of arthropods collected at the Colville River Delta, Alaska, 2011-2012 and 2014-2107. Researchers with the US Geological Survey began studying the reproductive ecology of birds at a site on the Colville River near the Beaufort Sea coast in 2011. Researchers concurrently collected arthropods at 3-day intervals to understand the relationship between the seasonal abundance of arthropods and the reproductive output of insectivorous birds.
Purpose:
These observations were collected to better understand how the seasonal availability of arthropods may affect the reproductive output of insectivorous birds.
Supplemental_Information:
This release contains multiple tables that contribute to a more comprehensive collection with information on avian demographics and associated environmental conditions collected at the Colville River Delta, Alaska, 2011-2018. Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey began studying the reproductive ecology of birds at this site near the Beaufort Sea coast in 2011, focusing study efforts on geese and shorebirds. Researchers also collected information on seasonal trends in snow cover, temperature, wind, and the abundance of arthropods (data included in this data package).

Methodology_Description:
We collected surface-active arthropods every three days from ten modified Malaise traps following protocols of the Arctic Shorebird Demographic Network (Brown et al. 2014). To better sample a variety of arthropod communities, we established five traps in dry, upland habitats and five in wet habitats adjacent to water bodies. Within a habitat-specific transect, traps were spaced approximately 50 meters apart. Traps were 40 cm by 40 cm screens at 90 degrees from the terrain, and were mounted over a 40 cm long by 10 cm wide by 10 cm deep trap filled with water in which the arthropods were trapped. We stored samples in ethanol for enumeration and identification after the field season.

After the field season, preserved arthropod samples were shipped to the laboratory of Aquatic Biology Associates, Inc., for identification to functional group (family or order, as practical). Technicians at Aquatic Biology Associates applied established length-mass relationships to estimate the biomass (mg) of prey items (see Saalfeld et al. 2019 for details).
