Description:
Abstract:
This dataset consists of one table with a record (row) for each goose location and columns containing location information and covariates. The dataset was used in an analysis of altitude selection and flight propensity in an accompanying paper (Weiser et al. 2024) and is being provided here to allow replication of that analysis. Goose locations (latitude, longitude, and altitude) were collected with GPS tags and represent three subspecies: Pacific Greater White-fronted Goose, Tule Greater White-fronted Goose, and Lesser Snow Goose. Covariates include weather information from ERA5 (Hersbach et al. 2022). In addition to the "used" locations (altitudes at which birds were recorded), the dataset also includes "available" locations: altitude bands that the bird could have reached by that time, given its previous altitude, elapsed time, and maximum climb rate.
Purpose:
These data were collected to document migration paths and behavior of geese across the northeast Pacific Ocean. This dataset includes only goose locations that occurred over open ocean (greater than 1 km from shore). The present analysis was conducted to develop an understanding of when and to what extent geese may be susceptible to colliding with offshore wind turbines that are expected to be built in the study area.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Most of these data were remotely acquired and thus direct validation was not possible. Altitude of each goose location was also recorded by the GPS tag, which is expected to show errors on the order of tens of meters, and we also found evidence of much larger error (hundreds to thousands of meters) in some cases. We applied smoothing and error correction to the altitude values as detailed in the accompanying paper (Weiser et al. 2024; supplement).
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Attribute values fall within expected ranges and data were proofed for the presence of duplication and omission.
Completeness_Report:
This dataset includes only records for birds that were migrating over ocean (>1 km from shore) and do not include nearshore, onshore, or local movements. We also excluded records where it was unclear whether the bird was at rest (instantaneous ground speed < 3 mps) or in flight (≥5 mps). Each GPS tag typically recorded a location every 15 minutes, but intervals were sometimes longer due to low battery power. For the included records, no fields are missing data.

Methodology_Description:
Bird location data were obtained from three goose taxa (Pacific Greater White-fronted Goose, GWFG; Tule Greater White-fronted Goose, TWFG; and Lesser Snow Goose, LSGO) that winter in the Sacramento Valley of California, USA and transit portions of the northeast Pacific Ocean during migration to and from the Arctic. We captured birds in late fall or early spring in the Sacramento Valley (all subspecies), early fall in Oregon (TWFG only), or late summer in the Western Arctic or Wrangel Island, Russia (LSGO only). We applied solar-charging Ornitela® GPS-enabled tracking collars set to collect the geographic position and altitude every 15 minutes when battery power was sufficient. Data were stored on-board until the tag was within range of a GSM tower. We mitigated errors in the altitude data and determined whether the bird was at rest (instantaneous ground speed < 3 mps) or in flight (≥5 mps). See Supplementary Methods in the accompanying paper for further details on tag deployment, data acquisition, cleaning of the altitude data, and assignment of rest/flight state. This dataset includes only migration bouts over ocean (>1 km from shore).

The ERA5 reanalysis was used to estimate wind support, temperature, precipitation, and cloud metrics at each goose location.

Process_Description:
For each goose location, we used data from the ERA5 reanalysis (Hersbach et al. 2022) to calculate wind support at each altitude band. We also annotated each goose location with the distance to coast, daylight level, and weather data from ERA5: hourly mean air temperature at 2 m asl, total hourly precipitation (mm), cloud ceiling height (m asl). See Supplementary Methods of the accompanying paper for further details on acquisition of covariate values.

Table with a record (row) for each goose location and columns containing location information and weather covariates from ERA5 (Hersbach et al. 2022). In addition to the "used" locations (altitudes at which birds were recorded), the dataset also includes "available" locations: altitude bands that the bird could have reached by that time, given its previous altitude, elapsed time, and a maximum climb rate of 1.16 meters per second. This maximum climb rate is the largest mean climb rate +2 SD empirically estimated for migrating brant (Branta bernicla; mean = 0.62, SD = 0.27; Green and Alerstam 2000). Presented in a Comma Separated Value (CSV) formatted table.

For each used location (the altitude at which the goose was recorded), there are multiple associated available locations (other altitude bands that the bird could have reached from its previous recorded altitude). Each used location and available location has a row in the dataset. For some columns, the available locations have the same value as the used location.
