Description:
Abstract:
This data package presents raw legacy data collected during 1980 on the Yakutat Forelands of southeast Alaska. The data were collected to identify and understand the occurrence and distribution of birds and mammals in the ocean and wetlands near Yakutat. Migration "sea watches", aerial surveys, and ground plot surveys were conducted in the foreland area of Yakutat in spring (April - May) and fall (August - October) of 1980. The data are presented as PDF files of digitally scanned information as follows: 1) original field data forms describing migration "sea watches" in spring and fall, 2) original field data forms describing aerial survey observations of migratory birds in spring and fall, 3) photos, maps, and notes describing locations of aerial survey observations, 4) original field data of birds observed on ground plots in spring and fall, 5) original field data of habitat classifications for ground plots, 6) original field data of observations of habitat use by migratory birds, and 7) notes on images and maps used in analyses of habitat data.
Purpose:
These data were used to provide the first systematic surveys of migrating birds during spring (April - May) and fall (August - October) migration in the Yakutat Foreland in 1980.

Classification_System_Modifications:
Taxonomy within the class aves (birds) is provided in the data tables. We follow the most current (as of April 2022) taxonomic designations of the eBird/Clements Checklist of Birds of the World: v2021 (which closely aligns with American Ornithological Society's (AOU) Checklist of North American Birds (7th edition, with updates through the 60th supplement.)
Taxonomic_Procedures:
Species were identified by skilled observers in the field based on general appearance, plumage, behavior, and vocalization. Some birds were identified to a higher taxonomic rank than species or to a general species class. Small mammal species were identified visually to species and no specimens were collected.

Methodology_Description:
The migration "sea watch" data set contains a listing of all birds and marine mammals observed during a 15 minute period (begining at the top of the hour) that moved within a 200 m radius of the observation point on the Yakutat Forelands in spring (April - May) and fall (August - October) 1980. The observation point was on the beach (1.9 km S of Canon Beach Road via. Beach Road) and the focus was on birds either flying along the beach or flying past over water. Marine mammals were also noted. The data forms include data on species (or species groups), the direction of flight or movement, behavior, the number of individuals, and age and sex whenever possible. Data for each observation also includes weather conditions, sea state, and observing conditions. Observations were made using a spotting scope from a tent blind and only conducted when weather conditions were conducive for observations. Each 15-minutes observation period was during daylight hours for most days between 5 April and 12 May 1980 and between 6 August and 14 October 1980. This data form and codes were developed in 1976 and used for the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) Sea Watch Program [Migratory Sea Bird Watch (F038 (NODC Accession 0014158)], a migration study with included land-based study sites throughout coastal Alaska. A complete list of codes can be obtained from NODC (NODC Codes birds, File Type F033 Codes).

Methodology_Description:
The aerial survey observation data set contains observations of all migrant birds observed during aerial surveys on the Yakutat Forelands in spring (April - May), summer (June 19 and July 11) and fall (August - October) of 1980. During these surveys we determined the number and species (or species group) of water birds using the major estuarine and riverine systems between Situk and Doame River. Aerial surveys were conducted about every five days in spring and seven days in fall, weather and availability of plane permitting. The first flight was on 3 April and survey lines were established at that time. Eight surveys were conducted in spring (3 April – 10 May), two in summer (19 June, 11 July), and 11 in fall (6 Aug – 14 Oct). We reported on the presence of all birds, plus plumages (breeding and non-breeding) and any evidence of nesting for all segments of the survey. All observations were made from small aircraft (USFWS Turbo Beaver or Piper Supercub) flown at 30 m above the ground or water at 130 km/hr (Petersen et al. 1981)
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Ground plots were established in all habitats available by road, foot, or off-road vehicle from the town of Yakutat on the Yakutat Forelands. Ground plots were established 4-8 April 1980. Plots were surveyed at 7-day intervals in spring from 4 April to 12 May, then in fall, from 7 August to 13 October 1980, we reported on the presence of all birds, plus plumages (breeding and non-breeding) and any evidence of nesting (including young, flightless chicks), described the habitat in each plot, and summarized species observations for all plots. Plot names and USGS topographic map locations are as follows: Canon [sic] Beach Road #1 (Yakutat C-5, 15); Canon [sic] Beach Road #2 (Yakutat C-5, 16); Lost River Road #1 (Yakutat C-5, 15 and 16); Lost River Road #2 (Yakutat C-5, 15); Situk Flats #1 (Yakutat C-5, 36); Situk Flats #2 (Yakutat C-5, 25 and 26); Railroad plot #1 (Yakutat C-5, 23 and 26); Spruce Forest (Yakutat C-5, 17 and 18); Spruce Forest - Edge (Yakutat C-5, 17 and 18); and Phipps Peninsula (Yakutat D-5, 2, 3, 23 – 36; Petersen et al. 1981)

Methodology_Description:
The color infrared photos of the Yakutat Forelands study area, map of the aerial survey routes and areas examined along the route, computations of shoreline distances and areas surveyed during aerial surveys, and the vegetation interpretation from the color infrared photos of the study area were used to determine the amount of various types of habitat throughout the study area and, with the observations of birds on these habitats, estimate the numbers and types of birds using the Forelands study area in spring and fall of 1980 (Petersen et al. 1981).

Entity_Type_Label: Migration Sea Watches (RAW DATA)
Entity_Type_Definition:
Digital scans of the original (raw) field data for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Sea Watch Program surveys on the Yakutat Forelands, Alaska, 1980. Presented as a PDF documents. Field data sheet was based on data form and codes for the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) Sea Watch Program.
This data set contains observations of all migrant birds passing an observation point on the Yakutat Forelands in spring and fall 1980. This observation point was on the beach (1.9 km S of Canon Beach Road via. Beach Road) and the focus was on birds either flying along the beach or flying past over water. In addition we report on birds on the water and marine mammals. We report species (or species group), the direction of flight or movement, behavior, the number of individuals, and age and sex whenever possible. Data for each observation also includes weather conditions, sea state, and observing conditions. Observations were made using a spotting scope from a tent blind and only conducted when weather conditions were conducive for observations. Each observation period was for 15 minutes beginning at the top of the hour during daylight hours for most days between 5 April and 12 May 1980 and between 6 August and 14 October 1980. This data form and codes were developed in 1976 and used for the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) Sea Watch Program [Migratory Sea Bird Watch (F038 (NODC Accession 0014158)]. This is a migration study with included land-based study sites throughout coastal Alaska.

Entity_Type_Label: Migration Aerial Surveys (RAW DATA)
Entity_Type_Definition:
Digital scans of the original field data, maps, and notes for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service aerial surveys on the Yakutat Forelands, Alaska, 1980. Presented as PDF documents.
These raw data contain observations of all migrant birds observed during aerial surveys on the Yakutat Forelands in spring, summer, and fall of 1980. All observations were made from small aircraft (USFWS Turbo Beaver or Piper Supercub) flown at 30 m above the ground or water at 130 km/hr. This file contains a map of the survey tracks and subareas, the survey data, and summery sheets of common species. These data provide the first systematic surveys of migrating birds through spring and fall migration in the Yakutat Forelands, an important area for water birds migrating to and from Alaska.
