Description:
Abstract:
This data release contains two tables of information on polar bear distributions in the southern Beaufort Sea during spring, from 2001 to 2016. One table provides location (classified into 5 broad regions) of individual bears during the spring. The other table presents the aerial search effort by year and area.
Purpose:
These data were compiled to support investigation of southern Beaufort Sea polar bear subpopulation demographics using multistate Cormack-Jolly-Seber (CJS) mark-recapture models.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Each data record is classified with respect to which broad-scale region (spatial state) of the southern Beaufort Sea the record pertains to. Only a small fraction of raw data that were collected near a spatial state boundary would be a candidate for classification uncertainty.
Some satellite-tracked polar bears used GPS receivers, while others were monitored with the Argos System (i.e., satellite-based). The spatial state occupied by any given satellite-tracked polar bear during spring field season was classified as the state that contained the highest proportion of daily locations.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Distinction between periods of aircraft flight that were engaged in searching for polar bears versus dead-head flights en route from place to place required manual entry by someone onboard the aircraft. The degree to which those entries were consistent and precise is unknown.
Completeness_Report:
For an unknown number of instances (but relatively uncommon) the GPS flight logger had operational issues, meaning partial or complete data loss for a given survey flight.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Aircraft positions during polar bear searches were collected with global positioning system (GPS) at no more than 30 second intervals. Most search effort used one helicopter. Sometimes a second helicopter and/or a fixed-wing spotter plane aided the search effort. Uncertainty in aircraft position would be a function of the aircraft speed while searching for bears and the GPS recording frequency (no more than 30 seconds between location acquisitions).
Polar bear capture locations were recorded using GPS. Accuracy of a stationary GPS receiver is typically <15 meters.
Lineage:
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Each spring (from roughly late-March to mid-May), 2001–2016, USGS biologists captured polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea, operating out of 3 logistical bases (Utqiağvik, Deadhorse, and Kaktovik). Biologists used aircraft to search for free-ranging bears on the sea ice within areas predicated by fuel and safety constraints. Search effort was quantified by collecting GPS flight-following data of flight segments during which biologists onboard were actively searching for polar bears.
Each newly captured polar bear was given a permanent unique numeric tattoo on the buccal cavity side of both upper lips, and a plastic ear tag in both ear pinnae with a number identical to the tattoo number. Beginning in 2013, a microchip with a unique numeric code was injected subcutaneously behind either the right or left ear pinna. Recaptured polar bears were identified by the previously applied tattoo number and/or the ear tag number and microchip number. New ear tags were applied to recaptured bears if their previous ear tags had been shed. The identifying number of replacement ear tags was not the same as original tattoo numbers.

The USGS Alaska Science Center, Polar Bear Research Program has utilized satellite telemetry for tracking polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea for several decades. We used the subset of tracking data that coincided with the time frame of this study to determine the spatial-states for some polar bears.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The southern Beaufort Sea mark-recapture study area was partitioned into four spatial areas (states). The states were defined as large spatial regions to summarize interannual polar bear movements and the spatial distribution of capture effort, with the expectation that the combination would help explain heterogeneity in capture probabilities. The area in which most capture effort and all captures occurred during the study period 2001–2016 was delineated using longitude on the eastern and western extremes and distance from the Alaska mainland shore to the north. The eastern boundary at -140.93 degrees longitude and the western boundary at -158.49 degrees longitude were selected just beyond the most extreme longitudes at which a polar bear capture occurred. The northern boundary was defined based on search effort distance from the mainland shore. Aircraft locations while searching for bears were filtered to remove implausible locations, aircraft speeds, etc. and the distance to shore of the remaining locations was computed. The 99.5th percentile of the aircraft distances from shore equaled 104,606 m and was selected as the northern boundary as it encompassed the capture location farthest from shore and only excluded a small number of effort locations that were unusually distant from the coast.
The study area was divided into eastern and western sections by the longitude -151.00 degrees, selected to lie between the operational bases of Utqiağvik, AK and Deadhorse, AK, because relatively few captures occur near that longitude. Each eastern and western section was divided into nearshore and offshore regions using a distance from shore. Three distances from shore were selected as the 50th, 67th, and 80th percentiles of the aircraft distances from shore, i.e., 31,135 m, 43,246 m, and 54,562 m respectively. Three distances were selected to allow investigation of the robustness of estimates to the value selected. The four spatial states were therefore defined by the four combinations of east/west and nearshore/offshore (i.e., nearshore-east, nearshore-west, offshore-east, and offshore-west). A fifth spatial state was defined as all areas not in States 1-4.
Aircraft GPS flight-tracking data were used to compute the annual distances flown in each of the four states while searching for bears. The state in which each bear capture occurred was determined based on the capture location. Similarly, each telemetered bear was assigned to a single state each year in which location tracking data were available. Telemetered bears were assigned to the state in which a majority of their daily locations occurred during the field season. Daily locations of telemetered bears were estimated using a continuous-time correlated random walk model (R library Crawl) that input the highest-quality daily filtered tracking locations.
