Analysis of potential peregrine falcon nesting habitat using digital elevation models, high-resolution remote sensing imagery, and surface geology and geomorphology
The 2013 Northeast NPR-A IAP/EIS Record of Decision requires that studies and monitoring be conducted to, among other goals, .."provide updated scientific, cultural, and technological data and knowledge needed to adapt management decisions to changing conditions and circumstances." In order to provide data on change, baseline data needs to be collected and this project provides a unique opportunity to develop a geospatial data layer on the potential distribution of peregrine falcon nesting habitAbstract
The primary objectives of this study are to: 1. Help refine the potential peregrine falcon nest habitat geospatial data layer for the NPR-A 2. Aid in the interpretation of nest site selection and potential habitat based on the surface geology and geomorphology of the region 3. Determine the key characteristics for the selection of nest sites in known nesting locations relatively to optimal sites in areas without known nesting occurrence 4. Help develop strategies for detecting potential shifts in the distribution of potential nesting habitat Components of Work: 1. Conduct geospatial analysis using digital elevation models, high-resolution remotely sensed imagery, and geomorphology 2. Develop a tiered classification scheme that identifies high, moderate, and low likelihood associated with falcon nest site selection 3. Conduct field surveys to ground-truth the geospatial data layer 4. Prepare final report and journal manuscript of activities and findings from the research
