Description:
Abstract:
This data release includes remotely sensed lake and lake chemistry and water temperature data collected from 2011 to 2014) from a series of lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska. Most of the data is from two sites within the Chipp River Basin.
Purpose:
These data were collected in order to determine the nutrient sources and fluxes in large lakes and to understand the importance of seasonal water fluctuations on nutrient fluxes.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
The study was focused on two plots in the Chipp River Basin. The first is in the silty peaty lowland ecoregion, approximately 25 km from the Beaufort Sea coast. The second is in the sandy lowland ecoregion, approximately 55 km from the Beaufort Sea coast. Three other lakes in the Ikpikpuk River basin are also included.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Water chemistry data is fairly certain given rigorous laboratory techniques by the U.S. Geological Survey labs. Some uncertainty exists in nutrient data due to the time between sample collection on the North Slope of Alaska and analysis in labs in Colorado, and potential incomplete mixing of lake water, especially in the early summer due to snowmelt and ice cover. Water temperature sensors were checked to ensure accuracy with a few tenths of a degree. Lake area values are certain to at least a tenth of a square kilometer, which was the resolution needed to caluculate drainage ratios.
Logical_Consistency_Report: No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted.
Completeness_Report:
Blank columns in "Lake Chemistry.csv" indicate that values were not measured. "ND" indicates that a sample was below the instrument's minimum detection limit.
Lineage:
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Water samples were collected from either a well-mixed (leeward) location near the lake bank, or from the lake outlet. Samples were collected in a triple-rinsed 60 mL syringe and filtered into the appropriate bottle (12 mL borosilicate glass with conical cap for isotopes, 125 amber polyethylene for nutrients, 40 mL amber glass for dissolved organic carbon) using a 0.45 micrometer Whatman filter.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Water temperatures were recorded using rugged TROLL 100 (In-Situ Inc., Fort Collins, CO, USA) sensors.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Lake depth was determined in the field by sounding the lake bottom every 25 to 50 meters with a handheld portable depth sounder (SM-5; Speedtech Instruments, Great Falls, VA, USA). A minimum of two perpendicular transect lines, north-south and east-west, were used to calculate the average depth. The transects covered the range of available depths within a lake, including shallow littoral shelves and the deep central basins.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Lab
Methodology_Description:
Maximum lake areas were estimated based on lake edge bluffs determined using LiDAR imagery collected and processed by the USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center. Minimum lake areas were measured in orthophotography of the region collected in mid-summer of 2002.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Thawing degree days were calculated as the seasonal sum of daily temperatures above 0 degree C for a common date range in which all sites had data.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Drainage ratios were calculated as the change in area (from the early-season maximum to the mid-season minimum) divided by the maximum lake area.
