Abstract:
This dataset presents particle size data collected at the surface of gravel bars along Exit Creek, a stream draining Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska, in 2013. These particle size data characterize the sediments in the braid plain.
Purpose:
This dataset supports a study of the fluvial and glacial development of the area immediately downstream of Exit Glacier on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Exit Glacier and the associated Exit Creek are within Kenai Fjords National Park, and their changes over time are of interest to park visitors and managers.

The distribution of particle size along Exit Creek was documented with particle size measurements collected in June 2013 at the tops of 8 unvegetated mid-channel and lateral bars, a relatively consistent geomorphic environment. An additional 3 sample sites were selected on visually coarser bar side slopes considered more representative of bed material. Water level was relatively low during sampling, such that many of these surfaces were expected to become submerged at higher flows later in the summer. A total of 100 particles were sampled at each site along a square grid with 0.6 m spacing. At each grid intersection, a particle was selected blindly by a single observer by sliding a fingertip along the observer's boot until intersecting a particle. Particle sizes were tallied into half-phi classes using a metal gravelometer template. Cumulative percent finer computed for each class describes the full particle size distribution.
