Description:
Abstract:
This dataset consists of survey data from transects surveyed June 10-12, 2013 along Exit Creek, a stream draining Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. The survey was conducted using Global Positioning System Real-Time Kinetic (GPS-RTK) transceivers and tied to monuments previously established by the U.S. Forest Service. This survey repeated points from an initial (2011) survey of Transects 2 and 3 by the U.S. Forest Service and established Transects 4-7. The intent of the survey transects is to monitor changes in elevation across the braid plain of Exit Creek.
Purpose:
This dataset supports a study of the fluvial and glacial development of the area immediately downstream of Exit Glacier on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Exit Glacier and the associated Exit Creek are within Kenai Fjords National Park, and their changes over time are of interest to park visitors and managers.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy: Northing and Easting are reported to default raw output accuracy (0.001 ft), which follows the example of the initial 2011 survey and probably overstates the accuracy of the survey. For the purposes of use in transect comparisons, horizontal distance along the transect is reported to 0.1 ft, considered a reasonable representation of the repeatability of survey points.
Vertical Positional Accuracy: Elevation is reported to the default raw output accuracy of 0.001 ft, which follows the example of the 2011 survey but overstates the accuracy of the survey. For the purposes of use in transect comparisons, elevation accuracy was assumed to be 0.1 ft.

Process_Description:
The survey used two Trimble R8 model 3 Real-Time Kinetic (RTK) receivers, two TSC-3 controllers, and an internal RTK radio provided by the National Park Service Alaska Regional Office via Joel Cusick, who also assisted with survey setup. The base station was established at monument SRD3169 near a parking lot adjacent to the Resurrection River bridge on Herman Leirer Road. Previously surveyed points along the road and along Transects 2 and 3 were reoccupied using the coordinates of the points and the location-finding capacity of the survey equipment. New transects 4-7 were established from previously placed mag nails in the road to the far side of the braid plain using the capability of the survey equipment to locate points every 50 ft along a line. Additional points were added as needed to document the locations of prominent channels or where the depth of water prevented access to the desired location. Where water was present at a survey point, water depths were measured with a tape.

The point ID is a unique identifier that provides location information. SRD3169 is a monument located in a berm between the parking lot near the Resurrection River bridge and Herman Leirer Road. All other points are on transects and are named by survey repeat number, transect, and location along transect. The thousands place is a sequential number representing the survey repeat number, where no number is the 2011 survey and 1 is the 2013 survey (this survey). Subsequent surveys are intended to continue the series. The hundreds place indicates the transect number (1 through 7). The tens and ones places indicate the logical sequence of points along the transect, generally spaced 50 ft apart. The tenths place indicates a point added between regularly spaced points. The value of the tenths place indicates the fractional distance between the regularly spaced points. For example, an ID of 1405.3 is from the 2013 survey of transect 4 and is about 3/10 of the way between points 1405 and 1406.
