Description:
Abstract:
This dataset consists of survey data from bank profiles surveyed June 12 and June 24-26, 2013 at the edge of the active braid plain of Exit Creek, a stream draining Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. The survey was conducted using Global Positioning System Real-Time Kinetic (GPS-RTK) transceivers and tied to monuments previously established by the U.S. Forest Service. Short transects (profiles) at 24 locations on the left edge of the braid plain and 12 locations on the right edge of the braid plain were surveyed for the purpose of characterizing the magnitude of bank height and whether the bank sloped up or down from the active braid plain. The intent of the survey was to provide detailed ground conditions at braid plain margins to supplement remotely sensed elevation data.
Purpose:
This dataset supports a study of the fluvial and glacial development of the area immediately downstream of Exit Glacier on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Exit Glacier and the associated Exit Creek are within Kenai Fjords National Park, and their changes over time are of interest to park visitors and managers.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy: Northing and Easting are reported to the default raw output accuracy of 0.001 ft, which probably overstates the accuracy of the survey. For the purposes of use in bank profiles, Northing and Easting accuracy were assumed to be 0.1 ft. The distance from the top of the bank toward the stream is reported to 1 m and is accurate to about 0.5 m in all cases and to 0.1 m in most cases.
Vertical Positional Accuracy: Elevation is reported to the default raw output accuracy of 0.001 ft, which overstates the accuracy of the survey. For the purposes of use in bank profiles, elevation accuracy was assumed to be 0.1 ft.

Process_Description:
The survey used two Trimble R8 model 3 Real-Time Kinetic (RTK) receivers, two TSC-3 controllers, and an internal RTK radio provided by the National Park Service Alaska Regional Office via Joel Cusick, who also assisted with survey setup. The base station was established at monument SRD3169 at the Resurrection River Trailhead parking lot or monument SRD3039 in the Exit Glacier Visitor Center parking lot, depending on proximity to survey site. A total of 24 bank profiles were surveyed on the left side of the active braid plain of Exit Creek (as viewed downstream), including profiles at and between stream transects surveyed for monitoring elevation change and more widely spaced profiles in other reaches of Exit Creek. A total of 12 bank profiles were surveyed on the right side of the active braid plain of Exit Creek in locations chosen as representative. Each profile generally included five points, located -3, -1, 0, 1, and 3 m from the top of the bank toward the stream, which captured the true bank height in all but a few places with tall banks. The location of the top of the bank was visually estimated, and remaining points were located by measuring from that point with a tape.

The point ID is a unique identifier that provides location information. SRD3039CK is a check shot to monument SRD3039 located in the Exit Glacier Visitor Center parking lot. 1070 is the northeast corner of the Exit Glacier Visitor Center flagpole pad. The remaining points have a BH prefix, which indentifies them as bank height points, or points along a bank profile. The following three (or sometimes two) digits are unique numbers to distinguish the points. Bank profile transects were generally surveyed in groups of 5 points with sequential numbers, which can be identified by considering the sequential numbers in the ID attribute together with the Dist_from_bank_m attribute.
