Abstract:
This study focuses on a 67 attribute lake cover classification scheme covering the Bering Land Bridge area of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. The GIS dataset consists of 5170 lakes (which were extracted from a 5m resolution ifSAR/orthophoto image) and provides information on lake morphometry, hydrologic connectivity, surface area dynamics, surrounding terrestrial ecotypes, bedfast percentage, and other important conditions. The Seward Peninsula lake habitat study classification system provides lake specific information for a coastal peninsula area that will guide research and aid in the management of the natural environment.
Purpose:
The data was collected for the purpose of developing a classification system for the Bering Land Bridge. This will guide research into the Loon habitat locations and identifications, which in turn will aid in the management of the natural environment. Lakes located in ARCN are internationally recognized as one of the key yellow-billed loon regions in the Arctic. In remote and inaccessible parklands, it is cost-prohibitive to conduct comprehensive, landscape-scale fish sampling in lakes using traditional fisheries techniques. To address this fisheries data gap, the use of GIS techniques and remote sensing data such as high-resolution satellite imagery, recently acquired high-resolution digital terrain models, and spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery will be used to develop a geospatial database of lake type, connectivity, depth, and flood regimes to identify potential overwintering fish habitats that remain partially unfrozen throughout the year.

Attributes were created based on a technical classification and delineation created in ArcGIS. A manual check of the stream connectivity through each lake feature was done to compare to the automatically calculated values within the Connectivi attribute; some values were changed based on a visual check of the geospatial data.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Users are advised to read the entity/attribute section descriptions of the metadata record carefully for specific use of value variations. In particular, both Regim_YYYY and smReg_YYYY uses a value of -1 to signify NoData. smReg_YYYY also used a value of 333 to show that that lake feature is not included in the smaller study area and therefore is no data included for the attribute. Also, note that the NHD_Id field has special values of 999 signifying zero lakes and 9 signifying more than one older NHD_Id lake within the more recent lakes (manually updated). In addition to this, 176 lakes in the western point of the study area had their surface geology manually classified as Beach.

Data set is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Yearly (with the exception of one year) calculations were run over an 19 year period, on the SAR data but only on a small subset of lakes to make it easier to compute. Also, the NPS_Landco attribute pulled data from an area that did not cover 202 lakes within our study area.

Methodology_Description:
A classification scheme for bedfast and floating ice lakes was developed using SAR data from two satellites (ERS-1 and ERS-2). This is C-band data of wavelength 5.6cm with a vertical-vertical polarization and an incidence angle of approximately 23 degrees at the scene center. Data was acquired from the Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Level 1 data was processed into a terrain-corrected geo-tif file using MapReady software (v 3.1.24) with elevation data from the 2012 IsSAR digital terrain model (DTM) obtained from the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS).
