Abstract:
This metadata document describes the data contained in the "rawData" folder of this data package. This data package contains all data collected by the Argos System from 921 satellite transmitters attached to adult Pacific walruses in the Bering and Chukchi Seas, in U.S. and Russian waters, 1988-2019. Five data files are included in the "rawData" folder of this data package. Two data files (with identical content) contain the raw Argos DIAG (Diagnostic) data, one in the legacy verbose ASCII format and one in a tabular Comma Separated Value (CSV) format. Two other data files (with identical content) contain the raw Argos DS (Dispose) data, one in the legacy verbose ASCII format and one in a tabular CSV format. The fifth file, "deploymentAttributes", contains one record for each transmitter deployment in a CSV formatted table. The deployment attributes file contains information such as when the transmitter was attached to the animal, when tracking of a live animal ended, and a variety of variables describing the animal and transmitter. This table is identical to the "deploymentAttributes" table in the "processedData" folder of this data package.
Purpose:
These data were collected to better understand the movements and behaviors of Pacific walruses for numerous studies, each of which had a specific geographical or seasonal focus. Users of this dataset are cautioned to understand the geographic and seasonal nuances of each deployment effort as well as the limitations of each transmitter type, including the limitations of tags with short retention durations that impart a geographic bias to the resulting tracking data that favors deployment regions.

These raw data are provided with this data package for completeness of the archive. Quality-controlled, processed data are included in the "processedData" folder with this data package. Those data are better suited for most analytical purposes.
Data users are advised to review the README and metadata documents to ensure proper use of the 'Deployment_Fate' and 'Tracking_Status' variables. Misuse or disregard of these variables could result in location data from dead animals or detached transmitters being incorrectly analyzed as data representing a live animal. For tags that detached from walruses, the "rawData" files contain up to 3 months of location data collected after detachment. The inclusion of data collected post-detachment is provided for persons interested in the post-detachment locations, or possibly sea ice drift if detachment occurred onto an ice floe.
The deployment attributes and processed tracking data in this data package are also publicly available in Movebank (www.movebank.org) under a study entitled: "pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS".

All location and raw (coded) sensor data are exactly as disseminated by Service Argos. Transmission parity errors (misrepresentations of 1's and 0's introduced during earth-to-satellite communication) occur and should be expected within the raw sensor data values. If interested in sensor data, it is advised to use the decoded sensor data provided in the processedData package of this data release. Deployment attribute data have been cross-checked with original deployment records for accuracy.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All values are consistent with animal tracking data obtained by the Argos System. Files included in this data package may contain data obtained post-mortality or post-detachment. For analyses of live free-ranging walruses using files in this "rawData" folder, care must be exercised to use only those data records collected on or before the deployment end time stamp (provided in the "deploymentAttributes" table included with the data package). There is also a variable named 'Tracking_Status' in the tabular CSV files that distinguishes the data records collected from live animals (see metadata below). Blank cells indicate attributes that were not collected or not determined.

These data comprise the complete set of transmissions collected by the Argos satellite system from satellite transmitters described in the "deploymentAttributes" table. Temporal gaps in the tracking data time series are intrinsic to the Argos System due to the intermittent coverage of orbiting satellites. Additional temporal gaps are often intentionally introduced by transmitting intermittently to conserve power (i.e., duty cycles). Unintentional data gaps can be introduced by many factors such as insufficient power, antenna damage, or walrus behavior and habitat.

The raw DIAG data from the Argos System provides two location estimates ('primary' and 'alternate'). The 1-sigma (68% of locations) accuracy range is 250-1500 m for 'primary' locations and is unspecified for 'alternate' locations (see Argos Manuals - included with this data package; Douglas et al 2012 and references therein). However, in approximately 1-3% of Argos location estimates, the 'alternate' location better reflects the actual PTT location. Note that for the processed DIAG data file (included with this data release), an algorithm has been applied that rectifies incorrect choices between the 'primary' and 'alternate' location estimate.

Describes the use of the "Douglas Argos Filter" (DAF) for flagging implausible Argos locations.

The deployment attribute table (pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_deploymentAttributes.csv) has been cross-checked with original deployment records for accuracy. We determined the deployment end times (recorded in the Deployment_End_Timestamp_UTC field) in this table by manual inspection of data derived from each deployment. If a tag produced telemetered chronologies about haulout, in-water and foraging behavior, we utilized the chronology to determine deployment end times. Specifically, we assigned the deployment end time to be one hour after the final behavior chronology interval if that hour was reported to be in water. If the telemetered behavior chronology reported a terminal haulout period (that is one or more contiguous behavior intervals all reported as being dry indicating that the walrus was hauled out of the water) we determined the tag deployment to end one hour after the first behavior chronology interval reported as dry in that terminal haulout period. We chose to terminate the deployment after the first behavioral interval in a terminal haulout because we reasoned that there is no way to determine if the tag remained on the walrus the duration of the terminal haulout period or if it detached from the walrus immediately after coming to shore. If the telemetered behavior chronology ended in a series of predominantly dry behaviors with sporadic or cyclical wet behavior intervals without further foraging behavior intervals reported, as would be observed for a tag removed from a walrus that is exposed to tides and storm surges, we determined the tag deployment to end one hour after the first behavior chronology interval reported as dry in this terminal period. For tags that did not produce behavior chronology records, we determined the deployment end time to be one hour after reception of the final plausible tracking location. Some deployments produced tracking locations at sea after the last behavior chronology interval. This may reasonably occur because collection of behavior chronologies requires reception of at least two sensor messages that pass the cyclical checksum validity test, whereas Argos locations may be determined from any set of receptions that properly encode the Argos ID and are repeatedly received during an Argos satellite overpass. For these uncommon cases of the reception of at sea locations after the last behavior chronology interval, we inspected the tracking data to determine if the track could plausibly be explained by the tracking of a tag that has been removed from the walrus on an ice floe or a tag drifting at sea on a walrus carcass. If either of those were plausible explanations of the tracking data, we terminated the deployment using our standard rules based on the behavior chronologies. If those explanations were implausible, we terminated the deployment when the tracking data ceased or when the tracking data came ashore. We indicate reasoning for deployment end times in the deployment comments (Deployment_Comments) field of the deployment attributes CSV file.

When a marked walrus traveled to shore and thereafter shucked the tag, the Argos tracking locations were often not obtained on shore until sometime after we had determined that the deployment had ended based on behavior data chronologies. This could happen due to duty-cycling of the tag transmissions and/or due to the orbitography of the Argos satellite constellation that result in a delay between the actual arrival on shore and the first locations obtained from shore. Those locations on shore in the hours, days, weeks or even months after the end of the deployment provide valid information about the location where the marked walrus came ashore. If we were to disregard all locations obtained after the end of a tag deployment (when based on behavior chronologies), we could lose this valuable tracking information regarding the coastal destination. For cases where it appeared that a tag became detached onshore, we provide a deployment end location (in the deployment attributes file) that we calculated as a weighted mean (based on Argos Location Class) of the Argos locations obtained up to seven days after the deployment was determined to have ended. These deployment end locations, as well as all deployment start locations, were added to the Argos tracking locations (in Movebank only) after which the Douglas filtering algorithm (see below) was applied (in Movebank) to all tracks.

We determined the plausibility of tracking locations with the Douglas filter (Douglas et al 2012). We parameterized the algorithm to retain all standard Argos class locations (3, 2, 1), and to retain all non-standard Argos class locations (0, A, B, and Z) within 2 km of a previous or subsequent retained location. Remaining locations were retained using a "distance angle rate" algorithm that accepted locations if they did not result in unreasonable speeds (>10km/hr) and did not result in acute out-and-back again movements that are characteristically generated by an erroneous outlier location estimate (Douglas filter rate coefficient value = 25). After the initial filtering, we examined each track and made a relatively small number (0.2%) of manual adjustments to the algorithm-based decisions. The most commonly made manual adjustments to the Douglas filter was to exclude locations that occurred far inland or to exclude standard Argos locations that nevertheless resulted in implausible rates of movement over large distances. This manual flagging of implausible locations in this data archive may differ slightly from filtering used in prior publications that used the tracking data in this release. This ASCII text file contains all Diagnostic (DIAG) data exactly as disseminated by Service Argos, in the "DIAG" legacy format. The Argos DIAG format contains information about the estimated location and the transmissions collected during each satellite overpass. Data from each overpass include the primary location estimate (Solution 1), the alternate location estimate (Solution 2), and several other variables such as the location class (accuracy), signal strength, and a single 'example' record of sensor data from an arbitrarily determined transmission. DIAG is the most appropriate data format for analyses of location.
All DIAG legacy format data are, also, presented in tabular format in the file "pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_diagTabular.csv" included with this data package. For details about Argos DIAG attributes, see the attribute definitions for the "diagTabular" file and Argos Manuals.

This ASCII text file contains all transmissions of the raw (coded) sensor data exactly as disseminated by Service Argos, in the "DS" legacy format. The Argos DS (Dispose) format contains all sensor message transmissions collected during each satellite overpass. Messages received during a satellite overpass are reported on multiple lines beginning with a header and followed by a variable number of records reporting the raw (coded) sensor data carried by each transmission. The header includes information such as PTT ID, satellite ID, and metrics about message reception (see Argos Manuals). DS is the most appropriate data format for analyses of sensor data.

The rawData package includes 5 data files:
Two data files (with identical content) contain the raw Argos DIAG (Diagnostic) data, one in the legacy verbose ASCII format and one in a tabular Comma Separate Value (CSV) format: (1) "pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_diagLegacy.txt" and (2) "pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_diagTabular.csv"
Two data files (with identical content) contain the raw Argos DS (Dispose) data, one in the legacy verbose ASCII format and one in a tabular CSV format: (3) "pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_dsLegacy.txt" and (4) "pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_dsTabular.csv"
(5) "pacificWalrus_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_deploymentAttributes.csv" contains one record for each transmitter deployment. The deployment attributes table contains information such as when the transmitter was attached to the animal, when tracking of a live animal ended, and variables describing the animal and transmitter.
