Description:
Abstract:
These data were part of a pilot tracking study of three adult female caribou from the Fortymile Herd in Alaska. The dataset is comprised of two comma separated values (.csv) files. Data includes: 1) processed (i.e., erroneous locations removed) GPS locations for caribou, received once per hour for 6 months (October 1998 to April 1999), and 2) spatial, temporal, and biological attributes of three female caribou tracked during the study.
Purpose:
These data were collected to better understand the effects of sampling regime, the combination of sample period and interval, on analyzing movements of female caribou in the Fortymile Herd as a case study.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Most attributes associated with the location data were acquired directly from the GPS collars. Selective Availability (SA), the intentional degradation of GPS signals, was active during the study. Positional error can be reduced to approximately 5 meters when GPS data is differentially corrected under optimal conditions (Moen et al. 1996; Rempel and Rodgers 1997; Dussault et al. 2001), unfortunately the manufacturer was unable to develop software to perform these calculations, so SA-induced errors were not corrected. To address the issue of positional error, a fourth collar was stationed at a known location to quantify locational error caused by SA. The data for the fourth collar are not included with this dataset.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All values are consistent with animal tracking data obtained by Advanced Telemetry Systems collars manufactured during the late 1990s. Files included in this data package may contain data with Selective Availability-induced errors. For analyses of live free-ranging animals, care must be exercised to use only those data records collected on or before the deployment end time stamp (provided in the "deploymentAttributes" table included with the data package). Blank cells indicate attributes that were not collected or not determined.
Completeness_Report:
These data comprise the complete set of transmissions collected by the Advanced Telemetry System collars described in the "deploymentAttributes" table. Temporal gaps in the tracking data time series are intrinsic to GPS due to the intermittent coverage of orbiting satellites. Additional temporal gaps are often intentionally introduced by transmitting intermittently to conserve power (i.e., duty cycles). Unintentional data gaps can be introduced by many factors such as insufficient power, antenna damage, or animal behavior and habitat. The filtering of implausible location estimates also contributes to temporal gaps.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Location estimates determined by the GPS collars (locations classes 'G') have a positional accuracy approximately 30 meters (D'Eon et al. 2002).
Lineage:
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
On October 24, 1998, 1.7kg GPS collars were deployed on three female caribou from the Fortymile Caribou Herd in east-central Alaska. Collars were programmed to collect and store locations at one-hour intervals for approximately 6 months. A fourth GPS collar was deployed at a stationary and known location to help quantify location errors caused by Selective Availability (SA).
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Lab
Methodology_Description:
At the end of the data collection period, collars were retrieved and positional data were downloaded from the collars and imported into a Geographic Information System (GIS). To assess SA-related error on movement rate estimates, the project lead duplicated the locations from the stationary collar deployed, but shifted the points by the mean hourly movement rate (260 meters). This created a second, identical dataset to the stationary collar but moved each location of the second dataset by 260 meters away from the original dataset. The project lead then determined the average distance between sequential true and shifted locations, simulating a movement of average distance, and subtracted 260 meters (the distance the two points would be separated by if there were no positional error) to calculate what was defined as the index of error.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The processed data package includes 2 Comma Separate Value (CSV) formatted tables: (1) "caribou_USGS_ASC_GPS_deploymentAttributes.csv" contains one record for each GPS collar deployment. The deployment attributes table contains information such as the time period when the GPS collar was collecting location data and biological characteristics of each tracked caribou.
(2) "caribou_USGS_ASC_GPS_locations.csv" contains one record for every location estimate collected. Each record also includes a 'Tracking_Status' variable that denotes whether the location was collected from a live caribou.
