Abstract:
This metadata document describes the data contained in the "processedData" folder of this data package. This data package contains all data collected from 130 Argos and Argos-linked GPS satellite transmitters attached to Buff-breasted Sandpipers at breeding sites in Alaska, migratory stopovers in Texas, and wintering areas in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, 2016-2018. The 130 deployed tags were comprised of 22 Argos Doppler PTTs (2 gram PTTs built by Microwave Telemetry) and 108 Argos-linked GPS PTTs (2 gram PinPoint tags built by Lotek). However, 14 Pinpoints never reported data, so they only appear in the deployment data records and not the location data files. One of the 94 functional PinPoint tags never reported GPS data, and 15 of the Pinpoint tags never obtained an Argos Doppler-derived location estimate. The raw (original) data from these tags were processed to accomplish three goals: 1) extract encoded GPS locations; 2) flag implausible locations; and 3) decode raw sensor data. Results of this data processing are presented in three Comma Separate Value (CSV) tables found in the "processedData" folder of this data package: 1) the "GPS_filteredLocations" table contains one record for every GPS location which passed a manual plausibility assessment based on considerations of movement rate, seasonal range, and habitat; 2) the "diag_filteredLocations" table contains one record for every Argos location estimate collected, accompanied by a binary flag that denotes an algorithm's plausibility check (based on distance, turning angle, and rate thresholds). Each record in both the GPS and Argos filtered-location tables also includes a 'Tracking_Status' variable that denotes whether the location was collected from a live animal, a dead animal, or shed transmitter, 3) the "decodedSensor" table contains decoded sensor data (for only the Argos Doppler tags) of the transmitter's temperature and battery voltage. A fourth CSV table named "deploymentAttributes" is also included. It contains one record for each transmitter deployment, and contains information such as when the transmitter was attached to the animal, when tracking of a live animal ended, and a variety of variables describing the animal and transmitter. This table is identical to the "deploymentAttributes" table in the "rawData" folder of this data package.
Purpose:
These data were collected to better understand the timing and patterns of migratory movement of Buff-breasted Sandpipers between breeding areas of Alaska and Canada and wintering areas in South America.
Supplemental_Information:
Data users are advised to review the README and metadata documents to ensure proper use of the 'Deployment_Fate' and 'Tracking_Status' variables. Misuse or disregard of these variables could result in location data from dead animals or detached transmitters being incorrectly analyzed as data representing a live animal. Also note that, outlier values are not uncommon in the sensor data due to transmission parity errors introduced during satellite communications. The GPS tags communicated the GPS locations as sensor data and the transmissions were accompanied by a checksum value for detecting parity errors. The Argos tags communicated temperature and voltage as sensor data and the transmissions were not accompanied by a checksum value.

Implausible Argos location estimates were flagged using the Douglas Argos-filter (DAF). DAF is an ad-hoc algorithm that identifies implausible Argos location estimates based on user-defined thresholds which allows the algorithm's performance to be tuned to species' movement, behaviors, and study objectives. Key thresholds define: 1) the distance within which sequential location estimates are retained by virtue of self-validating spatial redundancy, 2) a maximum rate of movement, and 3) the acuity of tight turning angles which are characteristically created by location estimates with large errors. The actual thresholds that were applied are detailed in the "Douglas-Argos Filter" Process Step of this metadata record and in the README file included with the data package.

Most attributes associated with the location data were acquired directly from Argos (aka., "Service Argos", "CLS", and "Woods Hole Group"). Accuracy of the location filtering flag ('Location_DAF_Filter') is vulnerable to omission/commission errors as described in Douglas et al 2012. Accuracy of the 'Deployment_Fate' and 'Tracking_Status' variables is sensitive to the type of data available; for example, temperature data from implanted transmitters provide a definitive measure of animal mortality, while an integrated interpretation of sensor and movement data is required to determine whether externally attached transmitters show evidence of mortality or transmitter detachment. Transmission parity errors (misrepresentations of 1's and 0's introduced during earth-to-satellite communication) occur and should be expected when analyzing sensor data. Users are advised to interpret just the dominant patterns among the sensor data values and be skeptical of any values that appear to be outliers.
Argos-linked GPS PTTs were programmed to communicate GPS data to the Argos System by encoding the GPS locations into the PTT's sensor data. Each transmission by an Argos-linked GPS PTT carries sensor data that contain the GPS data, as well as a CRC checksum for cross validating corruptions introduced by parity errors. The GPS PTTs used in this study were "PinPoint" models manufactured by Lotek Wireless Inc. (Ontario, Canada), and we used Lotek's proprietary software to extract the GPS locations from the raw Argos sensor data. GPS records that failed the CRC checksum test are not included in this data release.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All values are consistent with animal tracking data obtained by the Argos System and by GPS. Files included in this data package may contain data obtained post-mortality or post-detachment. For analyses of live free-ranging animals, care must be exercised to use only those data records collected on or before the deployment end time stamp (provided in the "deploymentAttributes" table included with the data package). Data users are additionally advised that outlier values are not uncommon in decoded sensor data due to transmission parity errors introduced during satellite communications. Blank cells indicate attributes that were not collected or not determined.

These data comprise the complete set of transmissions collected by the Argos satellite system from satellite transmitters described in the "deploymentAttributes" table. Temporal gaps in the Argos tracking data time series are intrinsic to the Argos System due to the intermittent coverage of orbiting satellites. Other unintentional data gaps can be introduced by factors such as marginal power, antenna damage, or animal behavior and habitat. The filtering of implausible location estimates also contributes to temporal gaps.

Argos locations have a 1-sigma (68% of locations) accuracy range that is 250-1500 m for 'Standard Quality' location estimates (location classes 3, 2, and 1) and is unspecified for 'Auxiliary Quality' locations estimates (location classes 0, A, B, and Z; see Argos Manual 2016 - included with this data package; Douglas et al 2012 and references therein). The Argos System provides two location estimates ('primary' and 'alternate'). The 'primary' estimate (lat_1, lon_1) is assumed to better reflect the actual PTT location, however in approximately 1-3% of Argos location estimates, the 'alternate' location (lat_2, lon_2) better reflects the actual PTT location. Note that for the processed DIAG data file (included with this data release), an algorithm has been applied that rectifies incorrect choices between the 'primary' and 'alternate' location estimate.
GPS locations were not accompanied by any estimates of horizontal error (e.g, HDOP). First-hand experience with the GPS tags reporting from known locations, including tags deployed on study animals, as well as consultations with the GPS tag manufacturer (Lotek), suggests average GPS errors are < 10–15 meters.

We deployed two types of satellite transmitters to track the movements of Buff-breasted Sandpipers: Microwave Telemetry 2g solar-powered Argos PTTs (Microwave Telemetry, Inc., Maryland, USA) and Lotek PinPoint battery-powered GPS-Argos transmitters (Lotek Wireless, Inc., Ontario, Canada). Transmitters were attached by leg-loop harness, body-loop harness, or glued onto the lower backs of birds.

Microwave Telemetry 2g solar-powered Argos PTTs operated on a 'battery-full transmission' schedule that sent transmissions to the Argos system whenever a solar-charged internal capacitor gained sufficient voltage. Lotek PinPoints collected GPS locations and transmitted them to the Argos system on a user-defined pre-programmed schedule until the tag's internal battery was exhausted. GPS locations were encoded into the PinPoint transmissions and later decoded with the proprietary Lotek Argos GPS Data Processor Application software package using the raw Argos DS-format data as input. In 2016, the 3.5 g PinPoint tags collected up to 30 GPS locations before attempting to transfer them to the Argos system during a 6-hour transmission window on a user-programmed date. In 2017 and 2018, the 4.0 g PinPoint tags collected up to, and rarely over, 90 GPS locations on a user-programmed collection schedule and subsequently applied a 'pass prediction' programming feature to optimally time the transfer of small batches of data when an Argos satellite was in-view. During transfers of GPS data, one or two Argos Doppler locations were sometimes collected, thus adding locations (albeit less precise ones) to the tracks of the PinPoint-tagged birds.

Transmissions from satellite transmitters were received by the Argos satellite system and relayed to ground based processing centers. Argos location estimates were derived by Argos based on Doppler principles. GPS location estimates were derived using GPS technology. Final raw Argos data were disseminated to the U.S. Geological Survey as text files containing Doppler location estimates and raw (coded) sensor data from which GPS locations were extracted using the tag manufacturer's (Lotek) proprietary software.

None of the transmitters contained activity sensors to indicate when a transmitter stopped moving (a sign of either a shed transmitter or a dead bird). Thus, in the cases where tight clustering of local movements suggested movement had ceased, we used readings from the temperature sensor of the PTTs (extreme high or low temperatures relative to ambient) and lack of expected departure from a migration locale to determine the deployment end date.

Data Collection. Argos raw data in both "DS" and "DIAG" legacy formats were extracted from monthly datasets provided by Service Argos (a.k.a. CLS America or Woods Hole Group) on CD-ROM. Beginning in July 2009, both DS and DIAG data were obtained from Service Argos on CD-ROM in tabular format as Comma Separated Value (CSV) files. The tabular files contain all information reported in the Argos legacy file formats. The tabular DIAG files also include variables describing the Argos error ellipse (beginning in July 2009). Argos Location Algorithms. Argos uses one of two algorithms (Least Squares and Kalman Filter) to estimate location by regression fit of a Doppler curve obtained from the perceived (shifted) frequencies of transmissions obtained as the satellite flew over the satellite transmitter (i.e., approaching, then retreating). The Least Squares algorithm provides two different location estimates ('primary' and 'alternate'). The 'primary' estimate is assumed to better reflect the actual PTT location. However, in approximately 1-3% of cases, the 'alternate' location is more accurate.
The Kalman Filter algorithm (introduced by Argos in 2011) takes into account platform dynamics and the use of a bank of Kalman filters to calculate positions. The applied Kalman filtering is a 2-step process: 1) the filter predicts the next position and its estimated error based on the previous position and its estimated error with a movement model; and 2) the filter calculates the new position and its estimated error by updating the predicted position using frequency measurements acquired during the satellite pass. The Kalman filter provides two identical location estimates.

Douglas Argos-Filter. Implausible location estimates were flagged using the Douglas Argos-filter (DAF) as implemented in Movebank. DAF is an ad hoc algorithm that identifies implausible Argos location estimates based on user-defined thresholds which allows the algorithm's performance to be tuned to species' movement, behaviors, and study objectives. Key thresholds define: 1) the distance within which sequential location estimates are retained by virtue of self-validating spatial redundancy, 2) a maximum rate of movement, and 3) the acuity of tight turning angles which are characteristically created by location estimates with large errors.

The processedData package includes 4 Comma Separate Value (CSV) formatted tables:
(1) "buffBreastedSandpiper_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_GPS_filteredLocations.csv" contains one record for every GPS location estimate collected that passed a manual plausibility protocol. Each record also includes a 'Tracking_Status' variable that denotes whether the location was collected from a live animal, a dead animal, or shed transmitter.
(2) "buffBreastedSandpiper_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_diag_filteredLocations.csv" contains one record for every Argos location estimate collected, accompanied by a binary flag that denotes an algorithm's plausibility check. Each record also includes a 'Tracking_Status' variable that denotes whether the location was collected from a live animal, a dead animal, or shed transmitter.
(3) "buffBreastedSandpiper_USGS_ASC_argosGPS_decodedSensor.csv" contains decoded sensor data such as a transmitter's temperature, battery voltage, and motion (activity).
