Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains nest visit records of Spectacled Eiders (Somateria fischeri) near the Kashunuk River and on Kigigak Island on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska since 1991.
Purpose:
Data were collected as part of a multi-year study to record the demographic life history of Spectacled Eiders. Specifically, we synthesized the available information for Spectacled Eiders to construct deterministic, stochastic, and metapopulation models for this species that incorporated current estimates of vital rates such as nest success and adult survival, and the impact of lead poisoning on survival. Lead exposure data are available in a related USGS data release: https://doi.org/10.5066/F7B27SDZ

Attribute_Label: Last_visit
Attribute_Definition:
The last day that a nest was checked. For successful nests the Previous Visit and Last Visit will be the same date. The three dates of Date Found, Previous Visit, and Last Visit are the required input to the program MARK nest survival analyses (White and Burnham 1999).

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Nest had been destroyed at the time of final visit. This would most frequently be a direct result of predation.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
"Human abandoned." Eggs present but cold. No sign that a female ever returned to the nest since the previous visit and the female was captured or attempted capture on the previous visit. In these cases, we assumed the nest was abandoned as a result of human researcher disturbance.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Indicates a nest where no egg candling or floatation data were recorded and nests were not revisited for determination of nesting success. This primarily occurred in 1991 when research was focused on other species or cases where a nest could not be relocated for some reason.

Attribute:
Attribute_Label: Initiation_Date
Attribute_Definition:
Estimated date that a nest was initiated. For nests found during laying this was calculated by back dating from the date found assuming one egg laid per day. For nests found during incubation this was calculated by subtracting incubation stage estimated from egg candling (Weller 1956) or floatation (Westerskov 1950) and back dating assuming one egg laid per day. Initiation dates that are blank indicate that there was insufficient information to estimate initiation date. This would always be the case for nests found predated or cases where incubation stage by egg candling or floatation were not recorded.

Attribute_Label: Hatch_date
Attribute_Definition:
Estimated date that a nest hatched or would likely hatch. Based on direct observation of hatched ducklings or pipping eggs, or estimated based on egg candling (Weller 1956) and bounded by any post hatch nest visit. Hatch dates that are blank indicate that there was insufficient information to estimate hatch date. This would always be true for nests found predated or cases where incubation stage by egg candling or floatation (Westerskov 1950) were not recorded.
