Abstract:
This dataset contains capture, measurement, and resight data from Spectacled Eiders (Somateria fischeri) near the Kashunuk River and on Kigigak Island on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska since 1991.
Purpose:
Data were collected as part of a multi-year study to record the demographic life history of Spectacled Eiders. Specifically, we synthesized the available information for Spectacled Eiders to construct deterministic, stochastic, and metapopulation models for this species that incorporated current estimates of vital rates such as nest success and adult survival, and the impact of lead poisoning on survival. Capture times and techniques are as follows: Spring: birds of both sexes captured using mist nets and decoys (Dau 1976). Early incubation: females were captured on nests using mist nets or bow traps (Sayler 1962). Late incubation (hatch): females were captured on nests using mist nets or bow traps. Brood rearing: adult females and ducklings were captured using mist nets.

At initial capture all birds were marked using stainless steel USGS bands following USGS Bird Banding Laboratory protocols. Most birds were also marked using plastic alpha numeric coded tarsus bands and/or nasal disks.
