Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains two tables of sampling information and size and mass measurements of the Baltic Tellin (Macoma balthica) from sites in Cook Inlet, Alaska, USA, and the Baie de Somme estuary, France.
Purpose:
To better understand environmental factors that support the nonbreeding ecology of Rock Sandpipers (Calidris ptilocnemis) in Cook Inlet, Alaska, we examined the relationship between the length and height of the hinge of the shell and relative masses of flesh in an important prey item, Macoma balthica.

Classification_System_Modifications:
At the time of this writing, some authorities had reclassified Macoma balthica as Limecola balthica. For lack of definitive taxonomic guidance, we retained the genus Macoma in this document, but recognize that the taxonomic status of the species is unresolved.
Taxonomic_Procedures:
Species were identified by skilled observers in the field based on general appearance of shell and benthic infaunal location.
Taxonomic_Completeness:
Taxonomy is completed for all samples. No voucher specimens were collected.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Measurement values were transcribed and directly into electronic database and checked immediately.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Cells for which a value was not recorded are empty. Values were within the anticipated range for the study species, and no outliers or erroneous measurements were identified. Note that the Macoma specimens used to determine ash-free dry mass as a function of shell length were not the same Macoma specimens used to determine shell-hinge heights as a function of shell length, and so the ID numbers of the Macoma are independent across these two datasets.
Completeness_Report:
In the 'quality' table, the empty mass of the crucibles was not recorded for Baie de Somme samples, so we were unable to determine the mass of the dry Macoma flesh ('Flesh') and the ashed Macoma flesh ('Ash'). These missing values are represented by empty cells. In the 'shellMeasurements' table, empty cells reflect instances where broken shells precluded us from obtaining shell length values.

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Lab
Methodology_Description:
At both the Kasilof River, Alaska, site and the Baie de Some, France, site, Macoma balthica were collected by hand in sandy/muddy intertidal habitats. All specimens were stored alive in saltwater aquaria at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institue for Sea Research, and were maintained on a diet of spinach that had been dried and pulverized into a powder. The specimens were used as prey resources in experimental foraging trials on Rock Sandpipers (see linked citations), and specimens were sacrificed (frozen) upon completion of the foraging trials. To determine the ratio of ash-free dry mass to shell mass, Macoma specimens were first dessicated for 24 hours in a drying oven maintained at 60 degrees Celsius. Each Macoma was then placed in a crucible of known weight, and the sample was weighed. The sample was then incinerated for 2 hours at 550 degrees Celsius.

Methods are reported for measuring hinge heights and shell lengths and estimating Macoma biomass.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Shells were removed and each was individually weighed. Flesh was dried and weighed, then combusted to ash in the oven and weighed again. From these three weights, we determined the ash-free dry mass (AFDM) of each Macoma as ((mass of dry flesh)-(mass of incinerated flesh)).
Process_Date: 2011
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
To determine the relationship between the height of a Macoma's hinge and the length of the shell. We measured the height of the hinge on each half of each shell, and then the corresponding length of the shell itself along the long axis. We measured all hinges and shell lengths using a 10X dissecting scope equipped with digital measuring software (Leica Application Suite; Leica Microsystems, Wetzlar, Germany).
