Description:
Abstract:
This data set describes nuclear microsatellite genotypes derived from twenty-one autosomal loci (Fal02, Fal04, Fal07, Fal08, Fal10, Fal12, Fal14-1, Fal16, Fal 17, Fal19, Gch03, Gch06, Gch07, Gch12, Gch13, Gch14, Gch17, Gch19, Pho110, KiRa9-1, and KiRa10) and nucleotide sequence data derived from two mitochondrial DNA loci (control region and NADH dehydrogenase 2). Samples were collected on Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Hawaii, United States of America. Samples used in the study originated from blood or feather samples collected in the field from live trapped birds or from tissue taken from dead birds or museum specimens according to each institution's load policies and procedures. We compared historical (samples collected in the late 1800s and early 1900s) and modern (collected in 2012-2015) populations.
Purpose:
To examine temporal changes and spatial patterns in genetic diversity between Hawaiian coots and Hawaiian gallinules using samples from Oahu, Kauai, and Molokai, Hawaii, United States of America.

Classification_System_Modifications:
ITIS currently lists Hawaiian Common Gallinule as Gallinula chloropus sandvicensis. However, the most current taxonomic designation by the American Ornithological Society's (AOU) Check-list of North American Birds (
http://checklist.aou.org/taxa ) considers Common Gallinule to be Gallinula galeata (thus, Hawaiian Gallinule:Gallinula galeata sandvicensis).
Here, we follow the current AOU designation as described in: Chesser, R.T., Banks, R.C., Barker, F.K., Cicero, C., Dunn, J.L., Kratter, A.W., Lovette, I.J., Rasmussen, P.C., Remsen, J.V., Jr., Rising, J.D., Stotz, D.F., Winker, K. 2011. Fifty-second supplement to the American Ornithologists' Union Check-list of North American Birds. The Auk 128(3):600-613

Taxonomic_Procedures:
All blood samples originated from live trapped birds, which were released after sampling. All feather samples originated from live trapped birds, which were released after sampling. Tissue samples from Kauai originated from birds that were found dead. For all blood samples, all feather samples, and tissue samples from Kauai, taxonomy was determined by experts in the field using plumage and vocal characteristics. All tissue samples from Oahu originated from museum collections within the U.S. and taxonomic procedures were determined by those institutions.
Taxonomic_Completeness: All samples were identified to species.
