Description:
Abstract:
This dataset provides salinity measurements collected from water bodies along 17 east-west transects in along the lower Kashunuk River, Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta National Wildlife Refuge, 25 June - 30 July 1993.
Purpose:
The data were collected to examine variation in salinity by water body type, geographic location and the distance between low and high salinity wetlands to provide insight into potential localized movements by Spectacled and Steller's eider broods.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Salinity measurements were collected along 17 parallel east-west transects (less than or equal to 10 km in length). Transects were spaced 500 m apart along the lower Kashunuk River. Observers walked transects and recorded salinity (+/- 1 ppt) in each water body (slough, river, lake pond). Locations were recorded on a map and transcribed to geographic coordinates. Portable field probes used to collect salinity measurements were calibrated each morning and occasionally throughout the day using jars of de-ionized water. Each probe had two different settings, one for salinity and one for conductivity. If the salinity was too high for the probe to read, the setting was switched to conductivity and total conductivity was recorded. Later, salinity was derived from conductivity using standard formulas. Some transects were repeated within a season.

Process_Description:
Sampling point coordinates were originally determined after being plotted on a map in the field (UTM zone 3N, NAD27). They were later converted to geographic coordinates (Latitude and Longitude, WGS84).
