Abstract:
These data provide information in support of the creation of a bioenergetic model to estimate winter prey consumption by Barrow’s Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica). One table consists of mass and morphological measurements of wintering Barrow’s Goldeneyes captured or collected in Alaska and British Columbia from 1996 to 2015. The second table consists of size classes of Pacific blue mussels (Mytilus trossulus) consumed by Barrow’s Goldeneye that were collected in Prince William Sound, Alaska in 1996.
Purpose:
These data were collected to support the creation of a bioenergetic model to estimate winter prey consumption by Barrow’s Goldeneye.

Winter captures of Barrow’s Goldeneyes in all areas were conducted using standard floating mist net methods (for reference, see the unpublished document: https://seaduckjv.org/pdf/to_catch_a_sea_duck.pdf). After capture, birds were banded, measured, weighed, and released. During processing, age and sex class was determined by plumage and bursal characteristics (Lewis et al. 2020).
For collections, Barrow’s Goldeneyes were shot using 12 ga shotguns and steel shot in wintering areas in Prince William Sound. As with captures, measurements, weights, and age and sex class designations were determined in the field. The esophagus, proventriculus, and gizzard were dissected immediately upon collection and injected with preservative (formalin) and stored in formalin until lab processing.
