Abstract:
This data set contains one table with mark-resight observations of Bristle-thighed Curlews marked on Oahu, Hawaii, with plastic color leg flags, 2012-2017.
Purpose:
These data were collected as part of a multi-year study to determine survival rates of Bristle-thighed Curlews.
Supplemental_Information:
This data set contains the encounter history of 48 Bristle-thighed Curlews. This file has been formatted in machine-readable format for use with program MARK and RMark applications. The specific formatting is described in the entity attribute section.

Analytical_Tool_Description:
Program MARK is a Windows-based software application, developed by Gary White (Colorado State University) for the analysis of data from marked individuals. Program MARK provides parameter estimates from marked animals when they are re-encountered at a later time. Re-encounters can be from dead recoveries (e.g., the animal is harvested), live recaptures (e.g. the animal is re-trapped or re-sighted), radio tracking, or from some combination of these sources of re-encounters.

Methodology_Description:
We used mist nets, whoosh nets, and net guns to capture Bristle-thighed Curlews. Upon capture, we applied a metal U.S. Geological Survey band on one leg and a unique 2-digit alphanumeric plastic band and/or unique combinations of color bands on the curlew's other leg.

Process_Description:
Data on banding and encounters were converted into capture histories. In each year that we encountered an individual Bristle-thighed Curlew, we categorized it as seen/alive. We determined the age of individuals based on age-specific molt patterns determined at the time of capture.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
We did not conduct resighting activities at the study site in 2015 or 2016. However, we were able to verify the live/dead status of curlews equipped with satellite transmitters during this period based on each transmitter’s activity and temperature sensors, and confirmed assessments of mortality (i.e., inactive transmitters) by whether birds returned to the Oahu study area in subsequent years. We used this information to assign the live/dead status for birds with transmitters from 2015–2016, but otherwise relied on resight information to determine the resight probability of all birds during periods outside of 2015–2016.
