Abstract:
This data package includes two tables of data for Bristle-thighed curlews (Numenius tahitiensis) captured 2012-2014 on the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge O'ahu, Hawaii (21.68 N, 157.95 W). One table provides capture, banding, morphology, and genetic data. The second table provides mark-resight data for estimating the size of the wintering population on Oahu in April of 2014.
Purpose:
The purpose of the study was to mark birds in order to estimate the winter population size on the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge, to track the local movements and habitat use of birds through banding and satellite telemetry, and to collect morphological measurements to determine age, sex, and general health information.

Individual sample ID's, dates, sampling locations, numbers, and reported age and sex of individuals were cross-checked and verified to match original field and laboratory data. Sterile technique was used throughout all molecular protocols. All assigned GenBank accession numbers were cross-checked for accuracy.

All values fall within expected ranges and data were checked for duplication and omission. Blank cells indicate no data were collected or not provided with the sample for a particular attribute. Ten percent of the samples from the breeding populations were extracted, amplified, and genotyped or sequenced in duplicate for quality control. Microsatellite loci were tested for the presence of genotype errors in Micro-Checker 2.2.3 (van Oosterhout et al 2004).

We captured bristle-thighed curlews using mist nets and whoosh nets on the wintering grounds in Hawaii. Morphological measures were taken and blood samples were collected from the brachial vein and stored in blood preservation buffer (Longmire et al 1988) prior to release of the bird.

We determined that mark-resight modeling of encounter data collected during discrete resight periods of the entire curlew-use area on Oahu was the most appropriate method for estimating the size of the wintering population in April 2014. To employ the mark-resight method, we first identified all potential curlew use-areas on Oahu based on general observations of birds and locations of satellite-tagged individuals. Use-areas were all open areas on or near the Refuge that were devoid of dense stands of tall shrubs and trees. We then divided the resulting curlew use-areas into 10 count units that could be scanned completely by field observers within about 10 min.
We conducted simultaneous scans of all count units at 5 different occasions within a day (14 April 2014) to generate the dataset in this data release. During each scan, we recorded detection (coded as 1) or non-detection (coded as 0) of all banded curlews observed.
