Description:
Abstract:
This data package provides data from Pacific Black Brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) tagged with VHF radio transmitters in July 1999 on the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska and detected in the following two years during their annual migration. Data include: 1) one table with attributes of the tagged brant, 2) one table with estimated dates of migration events, and 3) seven tables of detection data from radio tracking scans at coastal sites between Alaska and Mexico.
Purpose:
These data were collected to understand the migration timing of Pacific Black Brant that spend a large part of the non-breeding season in Mexico.

Methodology_Description:
Forty-five adult Black Brant were captured in brood drives on the breeding grounds in July 1999 near the mouth of the Tutakoke River, Yukon River Delta National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska (approximately 61.2 N, 165.6 W). A 35g VHF (167 MHz) transmitter with an external antenna was surgically implanted in the abdominal cavity of each brant. Birds were tracked during late summer (1999) at the Tutakoke River colony, fall (1999 and 2000) and spring (2000) migration at Izembek Lagoon, winter (2000 and 2001) along the west coast of Baja California, Mexico, and spring migration (2000) at Humboldt Bay and key locations in the Salish Sea.
Tutakoke River Tracking: Multiple aerial tracking surveys were conducted in August and early September to determine when tagged birds departed the breeding grounds. Tracking surveys occurred at the capture site and surrounding area from a single-engine plane outfitted with 3-element yagi antennae attached to each wing. A pilot and observer listened for radio signals from the tagged birds using a 167 MHz VHF radio receiver while flying at 914 m altitude. The approximate signal coverage area extended approximately 50 km from the capture site.
Izembek Lagoon Tracking: The daily presence or absence of tagged brant in Izembek Lagoon was determined almost daily via ground radio tracking surveys. Ground tracking occurred primarily from the top of Baldy Mt (330 m elevation) situated 4 km inland from the shore of the lagoon. A dual 5-element VHF yagi antenna tracking system was established on the mountain that allowed nearly complete coverage (40 km range) of tagged brant within Izembek and nearby embayments (i.e., Kinzarof and Big lagoons). Radio tracking surveys were also supplemented by aerial surveys and occasional ground tracking from elevated shoreline locations with a 3-element yagi antenna and receiver. The arrival and departure dates of radio-tagged brant (n= 45) were collected at Izembek Lagoon Alaska in Fall 1999 (August 27, 1999 - January 16, 2000), Spring 2000 (April 5 - May 26, 2000) and Fall 2000 (September 16 - November 29, 2000). Only day of departure was collected in Fall 2000.
Baja California Tracking: The daily presence of radio-tagged brant was determined at Bahia de San Quintin (BSQ), Laguna Ojo de Liebre (LOL), and Laguna San Ignacio (LSI) by ground and aerial tracking surveys. The radio tracking at BSQ occurred from the top of Monte Ceniza (175 m elevation) using a dual 5-element yagi antenna and receiver system and supplemented by scans from elevated (less than 5 m) shoreline locations or towers using a 3-element handheld yagi antennae and receiver. Detection coverage of radio-tagged birds encompassed the entire bay and surrounding area. The tracking in winter of 2000-2001 at BSQ occurred only in fall and early winter period. Radio tracking at LOL and LSI occurred only in the winter of 1999-2000. Scans of radio-tagged brant were conducted from elevated (less than 5 m) shoreline locations, except for one aerial survey at LOL. Ground tracking was made with a 3-element yagi antennae that provided coverage of tagged brant within an approximate 1-2 km detection area. In winter of 1999-2000 tracking of radio-tagged birds covered nearly the entire overwinter period (October-May).
Spring Migration Tracking at Humboldt Bay and in the Salish Sea: Radio-tagged brant were monitored (primarily 2- and 3-element yagi) almost daily in each of these embayments. Tracking at Humboldt Bay was conducted daily (20 February to 30 April 1990) from the ground primarily at a centrally located elevated location and supplemented by other shoreline locations providing near-complete coverage of this bay. Ground tracking of radio-tagged brant in the Salish Sea was concentrated primarily at the known brant spring staging areas of Boundary Bay, and Parksville-Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Scans were conducted primarily daily (mean = 1.2 days; range = 1-5 days) from the shoreline at Boundary Bay (28 October 1999 to 19 May 2000) and Parksville-Qualicum Beach (5 March to 14 May 2000). Use of other brant stopover areas in the Salish Sea, such as Birch Bay (12 March to 19 April 2000), Padilla Bay (12 March to 5 May 2000) and Dungeness Spit (29 March to 5 May 2000) in northern Washington, and along the southeast coast of Vancouver Island and offshore islands were monitored less frequently by aerial surveys.

Entity_Type_Definition:
Folder with five tables with detections, in Alaska and California, of VHF radio transmitters implanted in brant. Observers scanned through all transmitter frequencies and recorded which signals were heard during the scan event. Each column represents a single scan event.
