Description:
Abstract:
These data are in two tables relating to fall age ratios (number of juvenile birds : total birds aged) of Black Brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) staging in Izembek Lagoon, Alaska, since 1963. The first table is observation data for the age classes of Black Brant during surveys, and associated survey characteristics. The second table contains model-based estimates of age ratios by year along with Standard Error (SE), and 95% Bayesian credible intervals around estimates.
Purpose:
Each fall, the entire population of Black Brant stages during fall migration in Izembek Lagoon, Alaska. Since 1963, surveys have been conducted to record the number of juvenile (i.e., first-year birds) and adult (i.e., birds at lease 2 years old) brant and estimate the age ratio (number of juvenile birds : total birds aged) for the overall population. The fall age ratio estimate is the first measure of annual productivity for the entire population and is a potential index of recruitment given that most first-year mortality in brant occurs between the time of hatch and the migration to Izembek Lagoon.
Supplemental_Information:
Here we provide data from these surveys from 1963–2023. These data were previously analyzed through 2015 in Ward et al. (2018). We provide updated model estimates through 2023 using the same methods. Model estimates will be updated annually in future versions of this data release. Note that all annual estimates will change as the model is updated to account for new information informing model parameters. Therefore, historical age ratio estimates will vary slightly from those published in Ward et al. (2018).

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Counts and age identification are affected by conditions in the field such as weather and light. Surveys after 1995 included flocks at offshore eelgrass meadows that had been underrepresented in years prior. See Ward et al. 2018 for additional details of field observations and counts. Data were cross-checked and verified against field worksheets.

Methodology_Description:
Surveys were generally conducted from elevated shoreline locations that provided unobstructed views of geese as they fed on eelgrass close to shore or at consistent roosting and gritting locations. Since 1995,observers occasionally use boats to access and survey brant flocks at offshore eelgrass meadows that were under-represented in the early years (1960s to 1980s) of the age ratio surveys. We selected locations for observations that maximized visibility of geese and accounted for vantage point and weather conditions, such as precipitation, sun glare, and especially wind strength and direction, which are dominating forces in this region. We aged geese while viewing a flock through spotting scopes (10–120×) and tallying adult and juveniles on a hand counter. We distinguished juvenile brant from adults by the presence of white edging on the distal ends of secondary wing coverts. We typically started scans at one end of the flock and moved through the flock from closest to the distant edge, usually until we aged ≥30% of the flock. We took care not to age birds only at the edge of flock, where juveniles tend to concentrate. During a flock survey, observers recorded the location, date, time of observation, tide stage (flood, ebb, low, high), number of adults and juveniles aged, and approximate total flock size (Ward et al. 2018).

Process_Description:
We analyzed age ratio data using logistic regression models implemented in a Bayesian framework. We investigated variation in fall age ratios associated with sampling location, an index of flock size, survey effort, day of season, observer, survey platform (boat or land based) and tide stage. Annual predicted age ratios were standardized by survey effort and day of season.
