Description:
Abstract:
This data package contains 362 digital photos of a walrus haulout location at Cape Greig, on the Alaska Peninsula summer 2023 (2023-05-09 23:01:08 UTC through 2023-11-16 21:01:14 UTC). Photos were taken up to three times daily from a remotely operated camera located on a bluff above the haulout. The camera station was installed in the early spring 2023, prior to arrival of walruses at the site. Images are transferred via satellite link.
Purpose:
The photos were provided in near-real time to select managers and partners to help inform various decisions surrounding the walrus haulout.

Methodology_Description:
We installed a NuPoint Lite Sight satellite-linked camera station (Surrey, British Columbia, https://www.nupointsystems.com/) that utilized a Stardot SD500BN 5 mega pixel visible/infrared camera fit with a variable zoom lens. We manually adjusted the zoom of the lens when on sight to ensure that the beach area used by walruses was fully visible. To view the camera image during this process we connected a universal serial bus (USB) powered WiFi router to the Stardot camera's ethernet port and then gained access to the camera’s data stream using a cell phone that connected to the WiFi router. Once we could see the Stardot camera’s field of view, we adjusted the zoom and focus. The camera triggering and image processing was controlled by an integrated and configured image capture application run on an integrated computer on a chip board that managed communications with a Globalstar modem. We used the proprietary NuPoint web interface to set and update the image collection times.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The Globalstar modem transmitted images along with metadata to the Globalstar satellite constellation. NuPoint received, processed and then distributed the images to USGS.
