Abstract:

This dataset describes the marine environment surrounding Tufted puffin colonies in the North Pacific and Bering Sea, 2012-2014. Data were derived to assess the geographic variability in puffin diet in relation to variation in marine habitat. This dataset consisting of: colony, date, latitude, longitude, region, depth, slope, tide, and chlorophyll.

Purpose:

The purpose of these data is to describe the marine environment in relation to Tufted puffin colonies in the North Pacific and Bering Sea, 2012-2014.

Latitude and longitude coordinates were obtained from a commercially available Garmin GPS with a resolution to within ± 4 meters.

Ocean depths (m) and slope of sea floor (°) were derived from NOAA’s ETOPO1 Global Relief Model (http://ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/), tidal ranges were collected from NOAA tide tables (annual minimum to maximum height), and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) standing stock concentrations (mg m-3; 4 km pixel resolution) were generalized from MODIS Aqua estimates averaged over the months of May-August 2003-2011 (http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov). We measured the average of each environmental variable within a 50 km2 area centered on each puffin colony, excluding land area.
