Description:
Abstract:
This dataset describes marine bird and mammal surveys conducted in August 2012-2014 in the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. Data were collected to document the at-sea distribution and abundance of marine birds and mammals, and were conducted using standard strip width transect protocols (Gould and Forsell 1989). One observer and one recorder identified and counted birds on transect at all times. Surveys were recorded using a DLOG system and exported into a .csv file. This dataset contains survey data consisting of: date, time, latitude, longitude, record number, data type, species, count, behavior, distance, observers, observer conditions, trip ID, beaufort, transect type, transect width (m), and comments.
Purpose:
The purpose of these data is to document marine bird and mammal distribution and abundance in relation to Tufted Puffin colonies in the North Pacific and Bering Sea, 2012-2014.

This work was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Ecosystems Mission Area, and the Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) program of both USGS and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The USFWS Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge (AMNWR) and the Aleutian and Bering Sea Islands LCC also provided financial and logistic support. We are grateful to AMNWR managers Steve Delehanty, Jeff Williams, and Heather Renner for program support and for the use of data from Aiktak and Buldir, and to Captain William Pepper and crew of the R/V Tig ̂lax ̂ for outstanding research logistic support in the Aleutians. Additional advice and support was provided by Vernon Byrd, Scott Hatch, Lisa Spitler, and Bill Sydeman. We are especially grateful to those who joined us in the field work and contributed enthusiastically to our data collection: Josh Adams, Allison Anholt, Amanda Gladics, Keith Hobson, Kelli Johnson, Forrest Piatt, Barry Sampson, Jane Sullivan, and Ajay Varma. Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Surveys in all years were conducted with a trained observer and a data recorder, observations were identified to species or Genus using the NPPSD 4-Letter Code (Drew and Piatt, 2015), and conditions were recorded continuously using DLog seabird data logging software (R.G. Ford Consulting Co., Portland, OR). Locations of observation are accurate to within several meters, or whatever the GPS accuracy estimate was when the points were recorded. All data and metadata go through and USGS internal review for error and clarity checks.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data is complete, blank fields represent unattainable data based on sample type. When it was very busy on surveys and there were many birds to record on the water within the transect, sometimes the behavior and/or bin was not recorded for the sake of time. Those observations without behaviors are all treated as on the water and observations without bins are all treated as on transect. Behavior was only used for analyses to distinguish those birds that were flying from those that were not, as flying birds were excluded from density calculations. Bins were not used for any analyses, as all birds on transect (from all bins) were combined to calculate densities, so bin is not a critical piece of information, other than denoting whether the observation was observed on transect or not.
Completeness_Report:
Due to the nature of the data there will be blanks as some fields are not relevant, GPS failure, and unattainable data from observer in areas with a dense bird population.

Methodology:

Methodology_Description:
Bird surveys were conducted using standard strip width transect protocols (Gould and Forsell 1989) to evaluate seabird density and distribution at sea during times with sufficient daylight. Our survey strip width was 300 meters to one side of the ship's centerline (based on visibiliity) and included birds out to 300 meters in front of the vessel. Vessel ground speed was ~18 km/h-1. One observer and one recorder identified and counted birds on transects. Sightings were recorded using a computer-based system (dLog, R. G. Ford Consulting, Portland, Oregon) that assigned GPS positions to observations in real time. The observer identified and enumerated all birds on the water continuously, and conducted instantaneous counts of flying birds every 60 seconds. Both counts (birds on the water and snapshot counts) were combined to calculate seabird densities (number of birds/km2). All data, including transit data not analyzed here, will be archived in the North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database (http://alaska.usgs.gov/science/biology/nppsd/index.php/). Survey data was exported from the dLog software to a .csv file.
