Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains catch data from trawls at the sampling stations. We deployed a modified herring trawl in coastal waters within glacier fjords of Alaska. Sampling stations in each fjord were chosen randomly from a 2.5 x 2.5 km grid overlaid on navigable waters in the fjord. The number of stations in each fjord was chosen to achieve a sampling frequency of about 1 sample per 15 km^2, and was based on available resources and logistical constraints (weather, navigational hazards and vessel time).
Purpose:
These data were collected to characterize the forage fish distribution, abundance, and composition within four fjords in the coastal are of the Gulf of Alaska.
Supplemental_Information:
The overarching goal of this work was to compare and contrast the influence of glacier runoff on fjord ecosystems across the Gulf of Alaska. We sought to 1) describe the magnitude and horizontal range of influence of key near-surface physical characteristics associated with glacial runoff in coastal marine waters, and 2) characterize the distribution and response of lower- to upper-trophic level organisms relative to glacially influenced habitat gradients. This dataset is one of several types of data collected concurrently, including physical (conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD), nutrients) and biological (zooplankton, fish and marine birds) variables from the same sampling locations (detailed in project metadata).

Methodology:

Methodology_Description:
modified herring trawl with a mouth opening of approximately 50 m^2, diminishing mesh size of 5 cm at the mouth to 1 cm at the cod end, and the cod end had a 3 mm mesh liner.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
All fish were identified and enumerated by a fish biologist in the field, or samples were frozen and identified in the lab later. Large catches were subsampled by volume and total numbers were estimated from the proportion of fish in the subsample.
