Abstract:
This dataset contains data from the use of bioelectrical impedance analysis and deuterium injection as methods to estimate the body composition of female polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation. Data are provided on bioelectrical impedance resistance measures, the enrichment level of deuterium oxide that was injected and measured in blood samples, and morphological measures.
Purpose:
These data were collected to gain insights into the body composition of southern Beaufort Sea polar bears.

Methodology_Description:
We captured subadult and adult female polar bears without dependent young on the sea ice of the Beaufort Sea north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in April 2014, 2015, and 2016. Bears were weighed using an electronic load cell suspended from an aluminum tripod. Bears that had not been previously captured were aged based on counts of cementum annuli from an extracted vestigial premolar. We measured the body composition of bears using isotopic dilution and bioelectrical impedance resistance measures along with measures of body mass and morphological measurements.
