Description:

Abstract:

These data are the raw location data collected from satellite radio-collars fitted on adult female polar bears in the Chukchi Sea, between 1985-1996. The collars were worn by adult female polar bears ranging within the Chukchi Sea subpopulation boundaries as identified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Polar Bear Specialist Group. ARGOS collars were programmed to transmit for 8 hours centered on 0:00 UTC once every three days. Thus, for two consecutive days the ARGOS collar did not transmit location data.

Purpose:

Location data were collected as part of a study to better understand the distribution and movement patterns of polar bears in the Chukchi Sea.

Capture protocols were approved by the U.S. Geological Survey, (USGS) Alaska Science Center and USFWS Region 7 Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees.
Polar bears were captured and released on sea ice or land between mid-March and early May in the Chukchi and Northern Bering Seas 1986-1995.
Polar bears were located from a helicopter and immobilized with a dart containing either M-99 in 1986 or zolazepam-tiletamine (Telazol® or Zoletil®).
Only adult female bears (≥ 4 years old) can safely be fitted with collars because they are no longer growing. Adult males were not collared because their necks are larger than their heads, preventing collar retention. Satellite radio-collars were manufactured by Telonics Inc., Mesa, AZ and worn multiple years.
