Description:
Abstract:
This data is part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, benthic monitoring component and a seasonal diet study in Kenai Fjords National Park. The dataset is a comma separated file exported from a Microsoft Access database. The data consists of observations made of foraging sea otters (Enhydra lutris). Observers used Questar field model spotting scopes and binoculars to identify prey. Date, local time, dive duration, success, prey type, prey size, prey number, handling time and surface time are all recorded. Sites are in Alaska and include locations in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Kenai Fjords National Park and Prince William Sound. This data in this file were collected 2012-2016.
Purpose:
The purpose of this data is to allow comparison of a set of sea otter forage data metrics across time and geographic location. Metrics include: foraging success rate, composition of prey, mean size and/or size frequency distribution of common prey, number of prey items per dive, and rate of energetic return. Comparisons include metrics from one location over time or from one time across locations.
Supplemental_Information:
This foraging data set is a component of the benthic monitoring portion of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) program.
The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council and state and federal agencies are supporting a five-year, $12 million long-term monitoring program in the Gulf of Alaska region affected by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The monitoring program, called GulfWatch, includes 25 principal scientists and seeks to provide data to identify and help understand the impacts of multiple ecosystem factors on the recovery of injured resources. This program is expected to be 20 years in total length, but planned and funded in five-year increments. It builds upon the past 23 years of restoration research and monitoring by the EVOSTC and federal and state agencies. Monitoring efforts will span a range of species and marine conditions, organized in three components, with integrated data management and synthesis of science information provided across the components. The program includes sites in Prince William Sound, lower Cook Inlet and the outer Kenai Peninsula coast.
Environmental Drivers component – oceanography, plankton Benthic component – intertidal invertebrate & algae, sea otters, seabirds, lingering oil Pelagic component – whales, seabirds, forage fish

Taxonomic_Procedures:
Prey are identified while the otter is handling the items during a post dive surface interval. Observers use binoculars (10x42) and spotting scopes (field model scope, Questar Corp, New Hope, PA) to note identifying features of prey as well as characteristic handling methods that assist in identification.
General_Taxonomic_Coverage:
This data set contains foraging observations for northern sea otters, Enhydra lutris kenyoni. Prey items are varied and often not identified to species so broader groupings are used when applicable. Sea otters consume a wide variety of prey, primarily benthic invertebrates from hard and soft substrates, but also fish such as sand lance or lumpsuckers on occasion. Often prey cannot be identified and is entered as 'uni' for unidentifiable.

Data_Set_Credit:
Many people (USGS staff and volunteers, NPS staff and volunteers, Monterey Bay Aquarium staff, UCSC staff and students) deserve thanks and recognition for the collection of the sea otter foraging observations contained in this data set. Whether acting as the primary observer or data recorder, all have been crucial to this effort.
Brenda Ballachey, James Bodkin, Kelly Bodkin, Heather Coletti, Joy Erlenbach, Sarah Espinosa, George Esslinger, Jessie Hale, Kelsey Harrington, Kim Kloecker, Dan Monson, John Paszalek, Erin Rechsteiner, Max Rintoul, Carissa Turner, and Ben Weitzman. Additionally Rose Cunningham created the database and data entry forms and Gelsey Carmichael, Kelsey Harrington, Yosty Storms, and Chris Tran entered a lot of the data from the field data sheets and deserve kudos and gratitude. Carly Miller checked all the bout location data.
Native_Data_Set_Environment:
The original data is stored as an Microsoft Access database in a Windows operating environment, but has been exported as a comma separated text file for dissemination.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Focal otter foraging locations are estimated based on estimated distance and angle from observers and features marked on GPS base maps (e.g. emergent rocks, easily distinguished points on islands) and therefore should be considered accurate within 100 meters.
Number of prey items per dive is more accurate for larger items (e.g. octopus compared to mussels).
Size class of prey items is based on visual comparison of item to the width of the otter's paw (average in Alaska is 52 millimeters).
Logical_Consistency_Report:
We carry out a lengthy quality assurance-quality control (QAQC) procedure for foraging data. Rows are checked against field data sheets for missing values, outliers, and inconsistencies. Prey codes are verified. Uniqueness of bout identifiers is verified.
Completeness_Report:
Due to the observational nature of collecting foraging data, there will always be missing data. Some fields are not relevant to deriving meaning, e.g. observer, or can be assigned, e.g. unique bout identifier. Other fields are more critical to analyses and users must decide how to treat missing data before conducting analyses.
This data set has been checked and in instances where missing data could be assigned, it was done so.

Methodology_Description:
Experienced observers made detailed observations on tagged or untagged foraging sea otters from terrestrial vantage points throughout the study regions. Using 10x42 binoculars, Questar 50x80 spotting scopes and stopwatches, the observers followed single otters through successive dives, collectively referred to as a bout. They recorded the apparent sex and ageclass of the focal otter, the start and end time of observations, as well as dive times, surface intervals, foraging success and the type, number and size relative to the focal otter's paw width of prey captured. Handling time for prey consumption and portion lost, stolen, or given to a pup was also recorded.

Process_Description:
Observational data are collected by experienced field observers using 10x42 binoculars, high power spotting scopes, and stop watches. Raw data are recorded on field data sheets by the observer or a data recorder. Locations are obtained by moving the map panning arrow on the handheld GPS to the focal otter's location and recording the coordinates. Time of day is obtained from the GPS or observer's/recorder's watch. Dive times and surface times are obtained from the stop watch.

Process_Description:
Pre2014 field data were entered into Microsoft Excel spreadhseets. 2014 onwards raw field data entered into electronic form. Raw field data were entered into Microsoft Access database using a data entry form with built in validations. Access data were exported and the Excel data appended to create the csv described here.

Gulf Watch Alaska and Kenai Fjords seasonal study Sea Otter foraging observations 2012-2016
Entity_Type_Definition:
This is a combination of spreadsheet data and Microsoft Access data exported as a comma delimited file. Each record (row) represents one prey item or in the case of an unsuccessful dive, no prey items- retrieved by foraging sea otters. The unit of analyses is the unique bout which is comprised of one or more dives and each dive is comprised of one or more rows of prey retrieved. Each record also holds additional information about the focal otter, bout, dive, and/or prey item.
Entity_Type_Definition_Source: producer defined
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: bout_id
Attribute_Definition:
Unique identifier of foraging bout. Unique identifier 1 is assigned to the first observed bout. The next foraging bout, whether the same otter or a different otter receives unique identifier 2, etc. Bout identifier changes every time there is a break in the dive sequence. Every bout within 1 electronic file needs to have a unique bout number. Observers should identify unique bouts on their field data sheets, then data entry should ensure unique bout number within file. In this data set various bout identification schemes have been used in the original spreadsheets and transferred to the compilation.

Attribute_Label: site_name
Attribute_Definition:
Smallest designated spatial scale in the Gulf Watch Alaska nearshore monitoring program. For sea otter foraging this represents an area within a 10 kilometer buffer around each rocky intertidal sampling site, more specific location of focal otter than the region or block. In sea otter foraging data sets the site_name field is a combination of site_ID and site_name used in other nearshore data sets. In the sea otter foraging data there is one spatial unit more localized than site, specific_location_txt. Since the protocol calls for this data to be analyzed at the Region level, we have not standardized specific_location_txt names. The Nearshore Monitoring Protocol uses the same site designations for other monitoring components that are used in this dataset.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Sea otter foraging observations have been used in multiple studies for a variety of reasons. We present the GWA Benthic monitoring SOP for reference here. The data in this dataset may be comparable to other foraging data collected under different SOPs because they have core metrics in common. Discuss options with the authors of such data sets before proceeding.
This dataset consists of observations made of foraging sea otters in Alaska. Observers used Questar field spotting scopes and binoculars to identify prey. Location is noted to the scale of region, sometimes site, and sometimes with coordinates. Date, local time, dive duration, success, prey type, prey size, prey number, handling time and surface time are all recorded. Sites include Katmai National Park, Kenai Fjords, and Prince William Sound. The time interval includes 2012-2016.
