Gulf Watch Alaska is the long-term ecosystem monitoring program of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council for the marine ecosystem affected by the 1989 oil spill.

Description:
Abstract:
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. The dataset is a series of comma separated files exported from a survey software program (DLog, Ford Consulting, Portland, OR). The data consists of date, time, latitude, longitude, species abbreviation, count, and behavior. Each year the observers attempt to sample the same set of transects although weather, tide state and other factors can interfere with this goal. Transects are in Alaska and include locations in Katmai National Park and Preserve and Kenai Fjords National Park. Other researchers conduct similar surveys in Prince William Sound. The time interval includes 2012-2016.
Purpose:
The purpose of the surveys is to provide data to estimate the species composition, relative abundance, and distribution of all marine birds and mammals within the nearshore zone. The focus of these surveys is on marine birds that are trophically linked to the kelp/benthic invertebrate nearshore food web. Because other birds and mammals are encountered in the course of these surveys, observations of all marine birds and mammals are recorded. Specifically, the objective of this task is to assess changes in long-term trends in the seasonal abundance of seabirds and sea ducks in summer.
Supplemental_Information:
This spreadsheet will not be updated, but spreadsheets with future year's data will also be published.
This marine bird and mammal data set is a component of the nearshore monitoring portion of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) program. Related datasets from Prince William Sound can be accessed at:

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council and state and federal agencies are supporting a five-year, $12 million long-term monitoring program in the Gulf of Alaska region affected by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The monitoring program, called Gulf Watch Alaska, includes 25 principal scientists and seeks to provide data to identify and help understand the impacts of multiple ecosystem factors on the recovery of injured resources. This program is expected to be 20 years in total length, but planned and funded in five-year increments. It builds upon the past 23 years of restoration research and monitoring by the EVOSTC and federal and state agencies. Monitoring efforts will span a range of species and marine conditions, organized in three components, with integrated data management and synthesis of science information provided across the components. The program includes sites in Prince William Sound, lower Cook Inlet and the outer Kenai Peninsula coast.
Environmental Drivers component – oceanography, plankton.
Nearshore component – intertidal invertebrate and algae, sea otters, seabirds, lingering oil.
Pelagic component – whales, seabirds, forage fish.

General_Taxonomic_Coverage:
Covers bird and mammal species observed during nearshore surveys from small vessels. Transects surveyed were primarily coastal, within 300 meters of shore. Some surveys were considered pelagic when they transited narrow fjords. Observations are primarily of marine species and species that utilize marine locations. NOTE: the following codes are producer defined: BLBE, BRBE, GRWO, MOGO. All other codes are defined by birdpop.org and/or North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database (NPPSD) doi:10.5066/F7WQ01T3.

Native_Data_Set_Environment:
The original data is collected and stored as shapefiles in a Windows operating environment, but has been exported as numerous separate comma separated text files for dissemination. Dlog survey software was used to collect and store the data so that background maps and transect maps can be used to conduct the survey. Species sightings and associated data as well as a list of points describing the actual transect can be exported as comma separated or other text file formats. The shapefiles are available by contacting the data providers directly.
