Abstract:
This data set contains individual museum catalog numbers, associated Genbank accession numbers, and species designations based on the mitochondrial genome and ten nuclear loci for 55 Martes americana, 28 Martes caurina, 2 Martes of uncertain taxonomic designation based on genetic data alone, and one each of Martes zibellina, M. pennanti, Gulo gulo, Neovison vison, and Mustela frenata.
Purpose:
Data were collected to evaluate gene flow among North American marten.

Genetic samples were from museum collections of the University of Alaska Museum and the Museum of Southwestern Biology. Original sampling locations include interior and southeast Alaska, the Pacific northwest, northern California, Rocky Mountains spanning from British Columbia south into Montana and Colorado, and the northeastern United States and eastern Canada (Labrador).

Species designations were assigned based on 11 sites that were discrete between Martes americana and Martes caurina within a 688 base pair portion of Cytochrome c oxidase I (mtDNA) using primers from Folmer et al 1994. For individuals lacking Cytochrome c oxidase I sequence data from this study, we followed the original species designation that accompanied the sample (from archived information available in the Arctos collaborative collection management database:
