Areas of Specialization and/or Research Interests

Current Research

I have wide-ranging research interests on the neotectonics, tectonics, and earthquake hazards of Alaska and surrounding regions.

I am currently funded on three projects: Alaska earthquake hazards, Western Alaska Range, and Coastal Hazards.

Alaska Earthquake Hazards

I am the Alaska Coordinator for the Earthquake Hazards Program of the USGS. I provide input to the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program Coordinator on Alaska issues, and participate on the Earthquake Hazards Program Council. I am also the Alaska coordinator for the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) external grants program. Feel free to contact with me to discuss various proposal ideas.

I am also project chief of the Alaska earthquake hazards project. There are several tasks on the project to address the paleoseismology and slip rate of the Denali fault system (Peter Haeussler, David Schwartz, Tony Crone, Steve Personius), defining and delineating seismic sources (Peter Haeussler), paleoearthquake and paleotsunami studies of the eastern Aleutians (Rich Briggs and Alan Nelson), and understanding tremor along the Aleutian arc (Stephanie Prejean).

My interests are in understanding the Denali fault system, in finding active structures, and in understanding the neotectonics of Alaska.

Western Alaska Range Project (WARP)

I am the project chief of this new (in FY2010) minerals program project to better define the tectonic, magmatic, and metallogenic framework of the western Alaska Range. Taks leaders on the project are Dwight Bradley (geologic mapping and geochronlogy), Robert Ayuso (igneous petrogenesis), and Rich Goldfárb (economic geology).

My interests are in understanding the geologic history and tectonics of the region, understanding the exhumation history, and the neotectonics.

Coastal Hazards – submarine landslides and tsunamis

I am on a coastal and marine geology program project to better understand submarine mass failures in fjords in southern Alaska. Earthquake-induced submarine landslides were the main killer in the 1964 M9.2 earthquake, thus these need to be better understood. We (Homa Lee, Holly Ryan, Keith Labay and I) have been working to better understand the nature and extent of submarine landslides at Port Valdez and Resurrection Bay in the 1964 earthquake. I also am working with Lee Liberty (Boise State University) on better delineating megathrust splay faults in southern Prince William Sound.
