The 10th International Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium and
29th Canadian Symposium on Remote Sensing
June 2-5, 2008

Second Call for Papers

Abstracts Due March 15, 2008

The deadline for submission of conference papers has been extended to June 20, 2008.

This Joint Symposium is a partnership of the Canadian Remote Sensing Society and the International Circumpolar Remote Sensing Group. The Symposium will celebrate the International Polar Year (IPY) and recognize and present excellence in international remote sensing science in a wide variety of application fields. The Symposium will provide an international forum for the discussion of work currently being carried out in Canada, other circumpolar regions of the world (Arctic and Antarctic) and elsewhere. Session topics cover a broad range of applications and technical areas, including those dedicated to polar remote sensing, as well as sessions on other topics that do not concern polar work and may include areas such as:

  • Environmental monitoring
  • Wildlife management and habitat protection
  • Arctic vegetation
  • Land and water management
  • Pollution control
  • Snow and ice, glaciers
  • Climatology
  • Oceanography
  • Geology
  • Mineral and oil and gas exploration
  • Forestry
  • Agriculture
  • Wetlands
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Applications
  • Instrumentation
  • RADARSAT
  • LiDAR
  • Hyperspectral remote sensing
  • Ground, Airborne and Satellite imaging
  • Image Processing Algorithms
  • Archaeology
  • Climate change
  • Data Integration and Data Mining, Modeling
  • Geographic Information System and Web based portals
  • Boreal processes that have direct influence on Arctic processes
  • International Polar Year (IPY 2007/2008)

This symposium will be of interest to scientists, scholars, and industry and government professionals involved in renewable and non-renewable resource management in Canada and other parts of the world as well as polar environments. The symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of current applied international research, the presentation of new technology, and the advancement of international co-operation in the circumpolar regions of the world. It will also serve as an excellent way to report on International Polar Year activities that are being conducted in 2007/2008.

Presentations can be made either verbally or in a poster format.

Symposium abstracts will be reviewed, with author notification by March 31, 2008. Authors of accepted abstracts who are interested in publishing their work as a Conference Symposium paper are invited to submit the conference paper by e-mail to Helmut Epp Helmut_Epp@gov.nt.ca by June 20, 2008, however, publication is not a requirement to remain on the Conference presentation program. Authors who have submitted their conference paper already and wish to modify and re-submit their paper are welcome to do so, otherwise we will publish the paper already submitted. Symposium papers will be unrefereed and will be published in a Conference Proceedings Volume.

There will also be a peer-reviewed Special Issue of the Canadian Journal of Remote Sensing (CJRS) based on papers/presentations from the Symposium. The CJRS Special Issue will be the forum for peer-reviewed publications arising from the Symposium. The submission deadline for the Special Issue will be after the conference. Presenters are encouraged to consider the CJRS option, and prepare their conference paper accordingly. The approach has been to try to provide flexibility in enabling authors' contributions to the conference proceedings, CJRS Special Issue, or both.

A conference proceeding paper is not a prerequisite for submitting a manuscript for the CJRS Special Issue. The formatting for the CJRS manuscript would be as usual for the CJRS, and the manuscript would be peer-reviewed as with any submission to CJRS.

Note however that if you plan to submit a paper to the CJRS Special Issue, the CJRS paper should be "substantially different" than the conference proceedings paper. CJRS cannot consider material that has been published previously, and the conference paper would be a prior publication, even though unrefereed. Typically, the conference paper is a first version, and the full paper for CJRS would have additional results, stronger validation etc., and would benefit from feedback received from the presentation of that work at the conference. If you are interested in submitting a full paper to CJRS, you should bear this in mind, and perhaps use a shorter version of your work for the conference paper, and use the full version for CJRS.

The conference paper would be more than an extended abstract, but not the full paper that you might submit to CJRS for peer-review. It could be considered as a more abbreviated paper. Note also the 12 page limit was a guideline, it can be considerably less than that.

General format
- submit document as a Word.doc, single column format, 1" margins, title in caps, followed by authors and affiliations, abstract, etc.

Treatment of figures, tables
- embed in document, with placement as close as reasonably possible to the reference in the paper.

Citations, etc.
- at the end of the manuscript.

Abstracts

Interested contributors should submit an abstract of 250-500 words, accompanied by the following information:

Abstract title
Author(s) name, title, affiliation, mailing address
Proposed presenter(s)
Session Topic [chosen from list, or indicate "Other:"]
Phone, fax and email of author(s)/presenter(s)

Abstracts should be sent electronically, as an unformatted (i.e., no tabs, columns, bolding, etc.) Microsoft Word, WordPerfect or ASCII document to the conference email address helmut_epp@gov.nt.ca by March 15, 2008.

Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by March 31, 2008, and asked to confirm their participation in the conference by May 23, 2008. Abstracts will be available on the conference web site shortly after this date.

Posters

Recommended size of posters is 1 m tall by 2 m long. Posters should be on a single sheet of paper or multiple sheets to fit within this area. Text should be short and to the point (recommended no more than 2000 words) with ample graphics to relay only the most important aspects of the work. Poster authors should stand next to their posters for the first 30 minutes of the poster session, and then periodically revisit their poster after that to answer any questions viewers may have.

Oral Presentations

Oral presentations should be in Microsoft PowerPoint format and given to the session moderator on a CD-ROM or USB external drive for loading onto the conference laptop. If the presentation is on a USB external drive, it is recommended that the author also have a back-up on a CD-ROM. All presentations should be delivered to the session moderator the day before, but no later than the break preceding the presentation. Presentations will be given in English. Oral presentations will last 20 minutes, and followed by a brief question and discussion period. Please check the symposium Web page in early May for updates.

There are several Workshops being organized for the Symposium. Those interested to host a Workshop are invited to contact the Conference Technical Chair Helmut Epp for information.
