Abundance Survey

Walrus Abundance Survey Program

The current size of the Pacific walrus population is unknown (Alaska Stock Assessment Reports - U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service). USGS completed field work in spring 2006 in support of a new population abundance survey in collaboration with USFWS, GiproRybFlot, and ChukotTINRO. The survey design integrates new imaging and satellite radio telemetry technologies.
