Alaska Statewide Land Cover Mapping

This project, working with the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics, National Land Cover Database project, will produce a circa 2000 Landsat 7 derived land cover database for all of Alaska.

Abstract

Vegetation mapping in Alaska has been ongoing by the USGS since the early 1980’s. Cooperators have included BLM, USFWS, NPS, NASA, NOAA, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and The Nature Conservancy. Land cover products address the needs of most Federal and state land management agencies. Currently, there is little to no consistent medium-scale land cover information for the entire State and this project is an attempt to provide such data. This project, working with the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics, National Land Cover Database project, will produce a circa 2000 Landsat 7 derived land cover database for all of Alaska. Land cover information is one of the highest priority information layers requested by Alaska land management agencies. It is a basic component for determinations of landscape health, habitat condition, fire fuel conditions, and baselines for monitoring change, both anthropogenic and natural.
