Alaska National Map Implementation

The USGS Alaska Science Center (ASC) operates and maintains the Alaska Geographic Data Clearinghouse (AGDC) on behalf of its member agencies and serves as a repository and access point to Alaska geospatial data holders.

Abstract

The USGS Alaska Science Center (ASC) operates and maintains the Alaska Geographic Data Clearinghouse (AGDC) on behalf of its member agencies and serves as a repository and access point to Alaska geospatial data holders. The AGDC Clearinghouse database structure and user interface to The National Map (TNM; http://nationalmap.gov/) used pre-defined format and standards, thus ensuring that many of the data holdings of the AGDC can become incorporated into or are accessible by TNM portal. Inventory and conversion of the data will continue to revolve around the State of Alaska as a whole, utilizing 'best available data' for the eight base data layers. This activity will also include, when applicable, those cities identified for the Urban Areas homeland security effort. The Alaska Geographic Data Clearinghouse member agencies in Alaska currently include 63 Federal, state, NGO, academia, Native, and private entities. Update June 2012 This project was completed sometime prior to 2009. The AGDC clearinghouse is now in a process of being reduced in size and scope as new technology and processes have begun to replace the function of the data clearinghouse. Geospatial data is now served from The National Map (http://nationalmap.gov/). Cloud based data services are expected to replace the function of the AGDC data clearing house in the near future.
