Development of Vital Signs Monitoring Programs for National Park Networks in Alaska

This project supported the development of Vital Signs Monitoring Programs in Alaska National Parks Networks by working with individual networks to write their monitoring plans.

Abstract

Since the early 1990s, the USGS has worked closely with the National Park Service in Alaska on development of ecological monitoring programs. This work began with Denali National Park and Preserve in development of its Long-term Ecological Monitoring program as a prototype for national parks in the subarctic. Beginning in 2000, the NPS embarked on an expansion of its monitoring program to include all parks. The 16 park system units in Alaska have been divided into 4 inventory and monitoring networks. The USGS continued to work closely with the NPS during this major program expansion, working with each of the 4 NPS monitoring networks in Alaska on conceptual development and specific monitoring protocols.
