Abstract:
Relations between water-surface elevation data derived from satellite altimetry and dynamic surface water extent data derived from LANDSAT imagery data were used with a modified Manning's equation to compute remotely sensed streamflows (RSQ) at locations on the Tanana, Yukon, Susitna, Nushagak, Copper, Koyukuk and Knik Rivers in Alaska using satellite data. Data are organized into zip archives named for each study reach. Refer to the README file in each study reach archive for additional reach-specific details.
Purpose:
The relations between satellite altimetry water-surface elevations (stage) and computed flows were used to derive stage-discharge relations for each river location to support development of methods to estimate streamflow using satellite data (RSQ).

Flows were computed, calibrated, and evaluated using gaged daily mean flows at each reach with an active streamgage and historic streamflow measurements at each reach with a discontinued streamgages. Flows were computed using equations 1 and 15 from Bjerkile, et al 2018. Altimetry data were used to determine water-surface elevation. Altimetry data and DSWE data were used to estimate reach-average river width as a function of altimetry elevation. NED data were used to estimate channel slopes. Streamflow data were used to calibrate the unknown roughness parameters and channel geometry assumptions. See the README file for each study reach subfolder for more detailed information.
