Abstract:
This dataset includes physical, hydraulic, and thermal properties of soils collected in two sub-watersheds in the Noatak River Basin in northwestern Alaska. Physical properties include dry bulk density and porosity. Hydraulic properties include field- and lab-based hydraulic conductivity, soil-water retention data, and parameters used in a common soil-water retention model (van Genuchten model). Thermal properties include thermal conductivity, resistivity, diffusivity, and specific heat capacity.
Purpose:
These data were collected as part of the Hydro-Ecology of Arctic Thaw project (HEAT), which aims to understand the implications of Arctic warming on stream ecosystems. These samples informed cryohydrological modeling and catchment water budget calculations.

Soil pits were dug in representative landscapes for the purposes of investigating soil types, locating permafrost, measuring soil hydraulic conductivity, and collecting cores to be sent for laboratory analyses.

First, a hole was augered and the walls were brushed if necessary to remove smearing of grains along the hole walls. A measurement was made at a single head, and water level and time were recorded. At the laboratory, an intact sub-sample was obtained from each sample by using a slightly smaller diameter test ring to remove an intact section from the original sample. Each of these sub-samples was subjected to initial properties analysis, saturated hydraulic conductivity testing, and the hanging column and pressure chamber portions of the moisture retention testing. Several sub-samples were also subjected to thermal properties testing at the saturated moisture content and at the oven dry state.
