Description:
Abstract:
These data are in three tables relating to a series of ponds, visited weekly over the summer of 2013, in the Chipp River Basin on the Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska. The tables provide: 1) location and description of each of the ponds, 2) physical information on pond characteristics (area, volume, and temperature), water chemistry (electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonium, and total dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen, chlorophyll-a, and ash free dry mass), and 3) invertebrate counts. Four pond types were studied, including large and small thermokarst troughs, low-centered polygon ponds, and larger coalescent ponds. The ponds included a control group, and three manipulated groups, one heated passively, a second that was fertilized, and a third with netting to deter birds from landing on/near the pond.
Purpose:
These data were collected to understand how warming and permafrost thaw on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska impacts aquatic ecosystems, and subsequently invertebrate food resources for other species.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The water quality probe was calibrated each day that it was used to determine pond specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen.
All samples were stored in the cold and dark after being filtered on site and before shipping to the laboratory. In many cases the samples remained in the field for several weeks before there was a way to get them off the site (via float plane) and to the lab.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Attribute values fall within expected ranges.
Completeness_Report:
Many blanks exist in the dataset due to the tendency of some ponds, especially the low-centered polygon ponds to dry during the warm, mid-summer. Sometimes water levels were so low as to preclude the collection of some, but not all samples.

Methodology_Description:
Every other week beginning in early June, each pond was visited to collect water quality information. Field parameters (specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen) were measured with a YSI-6920 (Yellow Springs, OH) water quality probe, and samples were collected for other water quality constituents. Water quality samples were filtered through a GF/F filter and stored in a cool, dark place until they could be shipped to the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory for analysis. The filter was retained and used for both pelagic chlorophyll-a and ash free dry mass determinations. Benthic samples were collected from a plexiglass plate installed vertically into the pond bottom. On the opposite week, invertebrate samples were collected from each pond using a kick net to collect vertical sweeps from the pond bottom to the surface.
