Abstract:
Glaciers are critical sources of water and solutes to downstream riverine and marine ecosystems. Samples were collected from surface streams, groundwater, rain, snow, and ice in the Wolverine Glacier basin and analyzed for a broad suite of geochemical constituents including common field parameters, major ions, stable isotopes of water, nutrients, metals, and dissolved organic carbon.
Purpose:
These data were collected in a preliminary effort to 1) more accurately quantify the fluxes of solutes and nutrients from the Wolverine Basin, 2) determine concentrations of solutes and nutrients of biogeochemical importance, that represent the dominant flux, and/or that may be useful tracers, and 3) determine the relative importance of the glacier vs. non-glaciated landscapes in water and solute export.

All values fall within reasonable ranges. It was often not possible to shield the field monitor from direct sunlight, so some water temperature values may be artificially high. Blank values indicate that data is not available for a given solute. Many values fall below minimum detections limits, which is noted in the data using a less than symbol.

All measured values are reported. There are many missing values in the dataset because this work was completed as part of the development of the project. These two years of samples were used to assess conditions and frame the project goals.

Positions were collected with recreational grade GPS and thus are accurate within 10m.

Sites were visited in 2016 and 2017. Upon arriving at a site with sufficient liquid water, a calibrated field monitor was used to measure parameters. In 2016 pH, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids were measured with a Hanna Combo multiprobe. In 2017, pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, and turbidity were measured with a YSI 6920 V2-2 Multi-Parameter sonde. Discrete samples were also collected and filtered through a 0.45 micrometer GF/F filter into clean bottles. For dissolved organic carbon the sample was filtered into an amber glass vial that had been combusted at 450 degrees C for 4 hours. Samples were kept in a cool dark location and shipped to laboratories upon returning from the field, which typically occurred with a week of sample collection.
